At the time it was fair price for us. To be honest I don't think the trade worked out well for any of the parties. We didn't win any cups...that's the way I see it.
And let's be fair: we haven't seen Pouliot on the ice yet. He might be great.
Edit: I really don't think Staal would be doing this year much more than what Sutter has done so far. Maybe a bit more. Who knows. - Barnaby36
That is a pretty high standard. By that defination the LA Kings trade for Wayne Gretzky didn't work out well for them.
To me the Staal trade was very good asset managment by the Penguins. They traded a very good, short term asset in Staal for three pieces, two of which in Sutter & Pouliet, look to be solid long term assets. Even accouting for Staal's current contract, I truly do think Dumoulin, Sutter, & Pouliet bring more to the Pens as a team that Staal does by himself, as Staal just isn't a superstar. |

After Staal and Dubinsky spent the postseason feeding sticks to Sids head and back, I thought it was awesome of Borts to give the treatment back to another star player.
Honestly its about time too. This is what the NHL has created, This is the product they want on the ice, so if you can't beat em join em.
No penalty was called on the play LMAO....well that's common now in Penguins games. |

No suspension will be long enough for potentially ending a legend's career. - FinAddict
I don't think the name on the back of the jersey should be a factor that plays into the type/severity of the repercussion. We should only be judging based upon what happened and whether the offender is a repeat offender. Gotta keep the system fair. |

THIS
While the future looks potentially bright, so far the trade has just been Sutter for Staal at the NHL level
We'd have been a better team with Staal in the lineup to this point, now if Pouliot turns in to a Norris winning defenseman and we win 3 cups in the next 5 years, or if we trade him for a top flight player than wins us cups then we can judge again, but for now, The trade has only hurt us at the NHL level

No no hell no bad comparision. Gretzky made hockey in LA grow. He was pure Marketing there. Off course they tried to win the cup but in the end he was to LA what Mario was to Pittsburgh (minus the titles) |

You forget about the price tag. Staal would have cost 4M more than Sutter last year and close to 3M this year. That would have change the team dynamics. |

I was pretty excited when Jagr went flying last night. Now it's the morning after. I guess I will admit it was questionable if I can secretly be happy inside? I hope he is not hurt but you know, hockey hits at the moment just get me excited. The morning after everybody is a critic. Slow mo takes away the mojo. - powerhouse

Yes
We likely wouldn't have had the money to sign Scuderi.....
Does that make it sound worse? |

The system in general is stupid and provides no real punishment.
If it were some 4th liner instead of Jagr, he still might get a game or 2. 2 games in an 82 game season is nothing, as he'd lose less than 2% of his salary for scrambling someone's brain.
If they want these hits gone they need harsher penalties, they're just too scared to give them out. |

I read somewhere that we had a deal pretty much done with MacArthur and we decided to pull the trigger on Scuderi instead. It hurts. |

Bortuzzo gets suspended for this, but scandellas hit on Oshie gets a weak fine... Again punishing the outcome and not the act |

At least we get a good 2 game look at Dumoulin.... time to prop him up with a good partner and increase his perceived trade value. |

I'm actually excited to see Dumoulin play. I see him in the Ben Lovejoy mold. We'll trade him eventually. |

My only point was that winning or not winning a Cup shouldn't be the only criteria for whether a trade is a success or not. Other factors necessarily play into it. |

Yeah... he has no future in Pittsburgh.... but I think he could be a 3/4 d man for another team with a lack of depth at defense.... Which is why I think he needs to be held until a trade comes along that can net us a young top 9 forward with top 6 upside. |

Anaheim and Colorado. They'd have a use for him.

2 Games for Bortuzzo likely cools off the next game vs the Devils, so it had to be done,
Had Bortz got nothing, then you'd see some douche like Tootoo going after Crosby/Malkin to make up for it
Bortz will likely be a scratch for any rematch assuming the D-core is healthy
It puts this whole situation to bed |

Maybe this is true, but it still blows when head shots recently have earned 11K fines for some. |

I honestly dont care one bit if the hit was late. I don't care if hes hurt. I dont care if his career is over. The Pens need to kill everyone and win. Thats all I care about.
By all the rules put in place by the league however this was a clean hit. |
