right but these guys can't be running around the ice thinking "what if this goes wrong?" you'd never see a slap shot taken in that case. not absolving Stoner and it wouldn't have been surprising to see him even get 5 for it.

It's the whole "FINISH YOUR CHECK!!!" mentality. Even if the puck is long gone, "YOU GOTTA MAKE HIM PAY!!!!" *thumbs up*

Puck was gone, that was brutal and unnecessary.
- stinger67

I agree, Gretzky didn't high stick Gilmour

and Alain Cote's goal wasn't not good, right call again.

Stoner was already committed to the hit, Max put himself in a bad position.

Sorry.

Just watched this again last week. Not sure what all the whining was about. Gilmour (what a great Hab he was) clearly sticks his face into the stick, deliberately attempting to draw the penalty.

I agree it's not THAT late, and not exactly from behind .. but it's textbook boarding (he clearly push him, never try to hit him with is shoulder), and a completely unnecessary hit. It's at least a 5 minutes penalty.

It wasn't long after he called the ref over to the bench for a chat, the habs got a penalty.

I wonder what he said.

Regardless of vulnerability, what purpose is one hoping to achieve by finishing a check?

Body contact should be used to separate a player from the puck, or to help force a play. But finishing a hit like that doesn't change the play. All it achieves is injury.

- blarneylad

Claude Julien disagrees. He encourages all of his players to finish their checks.

He was too far from the boards, the puck long gone and it was from behind.

Sorry.
