I have said it before and I will say it again:
When is the last time, other than the reactionary Bobby Ryan trade, that the Sens actually took on money through trade?
Before you judge BM on his trades, think about that fact.
It's hard to 'win' trades when you aren't allowed to take on money.

Most likley back before they made their cup run. Again, at this point in the contend/rebuild cycle of this team, one would not expect them to take on salary, as they are trading older players for younger players.
They are starting to spend money now that these players are into their next contract. Take a look forward on the salary structure - they'll be nearer a cap team in the coming years. For example, next years' cap hit is just $3M below this years', yet they will still have to resign ZBad, Chiasson, Hoffman, JGP, Stone as well as Methot (or a replacement). That'll be $12M-$15M for those players, which will bring the cap to about $65M.
Once this team contends, the GM of the day will be spending money on players, but it only makes sense to do so when you are a contender.
