Got it. We'd have to move Sutter first to TOR obviously, then pick up Berg with the cap space we'd have. - znagle
I feel like there is a team out there who would pay a lot for Sutter. Wishful thinking maybe, but that's what my gut tells me. That would be my first move then use the cap space and make more moves from there. I'd do Sutter to Toronto for Winnik and a pick. Use that pick plus a guy like Dumo or Harrington to get the 2nd piece JR wants. I know it's not the best long term move to trade either Dumo or Harrington but with the Pens reluctance to use them, why not? They'll be off their ELC by the time they are full timers here anyway.
One big curveball is that I think the Staal stuff was primarily to 'motivate' Sutter like the Kesler talks last year. Meaning they dont want to trade him, they just want him to be better. 2 problems with this. 1.) if it takes a public announcement of pursuing another Center to motivate Sutter, all the more reason to get his weak ass off the team 2.) I think Sutter got way overrated after last years playoffs anyway...I don't really think he was that spectacular... |

So, to be clear, you'd rather acquire a 30 year old who has never scored more than 11 goals or 30 points in a season averaging a 33 point pace over the past 3 seasons, rather than a 27 year old who has scored at a 45 point per season pace over the past 3 seasons? - BINGO!
No. We'll take Tlusty. Just give us some more time

They've been scratching him but early in the season against us anyway he was on there 2nd line had a lot of speed. I liked him - dbell646
Not a bad trade for either team. Sekac has a little more skill. Smith-Pelly has a little more bruiser in him. Both 22. If I were picking one, it's hard to say which I would prefer, but I think I am leaning towards Smith-Pelly. Take the guy who is a little tougher to play against, but won't put up as many goals. |

A 22 year old free agent the Habs signed out of Europe who is significantly better than Smith-Pelly. |

I'd probably take Sekac I really liked his game. It was a very small sample size but I was impressed. |

Really, significantly better? He has more skill, but I wouldn't say he is significantly better. When the going gets tough come playoff time, I think Smith-Pelly is likely to be the more reliable guy. |

You have literally nothing to base this on.
Sekac looks capable of playing a 2nd line role in the near future. Smith-Pelly has over 120 NHL games under his belt already, and hasn't shown to be anything more than a 4th liner. |

So Dave Molinari was in on the motivational ploy, which is why he asked the question in the first place?!? - hardnosed
Botterill standing in the corner whispered to Molinari and said "Psst, ask him about Staal".
Just kidding..no but I think JR has a different answer if it wasn't for motivational purposes. I think JR would say something more like "Staal was a great player during his time here but we are really pleased with the group of guys we have here going forward" or something like that.. |

JR has made it publicly known he'd like to add another top 9 forward. Staal just happens to be one. |

If this is the case, isn't it absurd that coaching staff and management has to play these games to baby sit this vage? Stories like this make it so evident the kind of team mate and person Sutturd is. |

True, which is why I said "I think" thus stating an opinion. Also I do have a little history of Smith-Pelly in the playoffs to base it somewhat on. 5 goals in 12 games last year, not bad. Plus he is definitely a more physical player, which most likely translates better to the postseason.
So, while there is no playoff history for Sekac to base my opinion off of, there are certainly some indicators that are helping form the opinion I do have. |

I wonder if this has a snowball effect. Maybe now that ANA has more of a skill player than grinder, they may be more interested in Kunitz...
