Anybody hear what year the pick is in?
Don't mind the deal I guess but still makes me shake my head at what the Garrison return was.
2nd = top 4 D
or
2nd = undersized older prospect with upside |

Despres - Bieksa#3
Yeah I would've been good with trading Bieksa straight up for Despres. |

you have to consider age and salary as well..... not just about the player |

I don't think he's a bust but I think he has a lot of risk. For a 2nd I think it's a good gamble
Edit: it's also not a terrible deal for CAL, as you guys still have Granlund ahead of Baertschi and a lot of other talented young players - bezz44
hasn't been given much ice time.... Under 10 min a game this yr... looks like a soft winger so if he isn't top 6 he might be a bust. Lower cost then Connolly which is a similar situation but Boston gave up (2) - 2nds |

Yep... I'm still sour on the Garrison deal. I was a big fan and he honestly should've brought back a 1st |

Agreed. 2nds are awesome, but this is a decent gamble to take and it fits the direction the team is going in |

As Nucker mentioned, if we would've drafted a player with his upside with that 2nd Rd pick we'd have been happy. And Baertschi is a few more years down the development path, which admittedly hasn't been gangbusters to date. |

Vantel use your NA spot!! Everyone is jumping on Lums but others are not using their NA spot or IR spots as well. Not sure everyone knows how it works.....

Okay
2nd for top 4 D in his prime signed to a reasonable contract
or
2nd for older prospect that is approaching RFA and waiver eligible
still doesn't make sense to me.
I know Benning felt like he needed to make room and he felt that he had an abundance of D, I just find it strange that he values both types of players in the same ballpark. |

I agree, as long as he can be resigned to a 2 way deal it makes sense otherwise we have just acquired another player who might not be ready but can only play in the NHL. |

Dam, with the..i'm assuming addition of Sven...due to the logjam of NHL forwards, Utica is a clear cut contender for a Calder. Hopefully Markstrom can get down there soon enough |

You can't really compare every trade to previous trades. Too many factors at play and often it comes down to what's available when you want to make the move. I thought we should have gotten more for Garrison in trade but overall Benning has been fairly steady with his dealings, if not rather conservative. |

Exactly. If we drafted a player with his talent and upside in the 2nd round this year I would have been pretty happy. - Nucker101
I put a lot of value in NHL level development for young players. To draft potential is one thing but to get that kid some NHL experience is so valuable.
This is a young, talented player, recently drafted that has NHL experience. I like this deal a lot.
Who knows what you’re going to get with a 48th pick (or close to that)? I'd rather gamble on the known commodity. |
