What if they traded the pick? I'm genuinely curious what the reaction around here would be. - Sabresfan-365

I really don't know what the value of that pick at #3 will be. Is it enough to get Duchene or Hall? My gut feeling is probably not. |

NHL Draft Lottery reportedly happening Saturday the 18th, a solid 4-5 days later than expected. Great. More stress. Thanks @NHL |

2003 NHL draft. 8 players drafted in the first round went on to win the Stanley Cup. And they were all, dare I say, vital to their team's playoff success.
The top two picks won Cups (Fleury and E. Staal).
The other 6?
Drafted from #11 on.
My point?
For all you guys/gals on the verge of nervous breakdowns over the Sabres' finish, one player does not make a team.
We have the best prospect pool in the league 2 years running. And we're only going to add to that this summer (or we trade a pick(s) for a younger, established player(s) to surround our kids with).
We're in good shape, no matter what. |

This is all subjective unfortunately, including the best prospect pool bit. I agree with you in principal but just as one player does not make a team, a team needs that one player that puts them over the top.

They're going to go back to sucking the next few years. That suck would be much more palatable with a generational talent. You're also leaving out the superstar factor. McEichel would increase our draw in free agency and get us special treatment from the league.

You guys are missing the point.
Guys like Getz and Perry weren't drafted until 19th and 28th. And you know who was director of player personnel for Anaheim then, yes?
You don't have to draft first.
LA didn't. Anaheim didn't. Detroit didn't.

Why obtaining McEichel is key:
The object of being in a 30 team professional league is to put together the best possible team, win as much as possible to get into the playoffs. The massive tournament which decides the champion. The teams that don't make that tournament are ones that were not good enough or lucky enough to have the right things work out for them. Except the Buffalo Sabres for the last 3 years. Who deliberately did not want to win. Even the Oilers can claim ineptitude. You can't rationalize other drafts results because other drafts are not like this one. No player is like Mcdavid and no second pick is like Eichel. We didn't get here be ineptitude or misfortune, so in my mind the 'it doesn't really matter' argument is irrelevant. If it doesn't really matter then we never should have tanked. We should have tried, and then if we failed, a high pick player would be a proper consolation. The way it's supposed to be. |

But Chi, Pit and Tampa did. Again you could make the argument either way but these are all in the past and are irrelevant. While it's possible we could find our getz or perry with the STL/NYI pick this year, I'd rather not take that chance. |

Says the guy who's avatar is a Sabres fan hugging his tank? You do see the irony in the right? If we suck then its "Ha we're getting a generational talent", if we fail at failing it's "don't worry that doesn't matter". Since people were going to make excuses for the Sabres regardless, there was no point in tanking, since these fans didn't need to be impressed with the best player in a generation. |

[quote=Ihateallofu]id bet anything that unbiased and/or non sabre fans don't agree
with this statement whatsoever.
best by far?
carried them in the prelims?
what tournament did you watch?
that was a dominant effort by an entire team. 4 lines deep. 2 true scoring lines. an offensive top pair, a fantastic shutdown pair.
good goaltending.
like no weak links hardly.
your statements totally downplay the stellar play of nic petan, mcdavid, domi, bowey, nurse, lazar, duclair etc etc..
Like it was reinhart, then a bunch of lesser players. if that's what you saw, you need take the glasses off.
no one carried that team in any way shape or form. they could've won without any one of the stars that played well imo.
it would be no less silly for me to say that nurse carried them actually. and he was by far their best player.
I don't think he carried them by any means, but he was certainly one of their best players
Who did the coach turn to for his TOP LINE?
Who did the Team Turn to for their CAPTAIN?
Who Took the important draws?
You're right though, Samson Reinhart was just all hype and his father pulled some strings and got him a gig in the NHL, he will be a wasted draft pick, OH WAIT , The Oilers already have used up all the "wasted draft picks" for this decade!
we can argue who we thought was their best player if you like, that's fine.
but youre absolutely confusing the term 'carried' with best.
- Ihateallofu - MEBSabresFAN
so you used huge exaggeration, sarcasm, pointed to words that were never said and attacked the oilers as your response.
did you really think this was gonna be considered a reasonable retort? |

We could find our Getz with the 3rd pick.
You say that past drafts are irrelevant. Fine.
But placing every single ounce of our future success in one player is just setting yourself up for major disappointment if we don't succeed. |

There's no irony.
I've embraced the tank.
I'm not going to slit my wrists like many of you will if we don't end up with either of those two, though.
There are no guarantees in sports. You guys act like the Cup is guaranteed if we finish last.
