It's not closing a window. It's opening a new one that's the point I'm trying to make. Pavs, Couts, Burns, and Vlasic are still going to be rocks for this team in 2 years. There's a difference between signing an over the hill and perennial underperformer, and giving a young player a chance to crack the roster. Also, you're missing the point this season. All we're looking for is for a 6th defenseman. We already have our top 5 defensemen in place. Remember we also have Bergman coming into the professional ranks in 2 years. He will play in the OHL next year again. Plus, if we draft an NHL ready defenseman at #9 he will have a shot to crack the roster out of training camp.

Sorry. Lots of free agents are neither of those things. Lots of great fits out there who are paying dividends for their teams now who I pushed heavily to acquire last offseason. Particularly Niskanen and Stralman.
Before you rip Niemi apart remember just 2 years ago he was runner up to the freaking Vezina. Then he had a down year. You have to FULLY anticipate that he's going to bounce back this season. he didn't and they're making a change. Shutouts don't mean anything to me in the playoffs. There aren't many shutouts in the playoffs anyways. There will continue to be less and less as the league comes up with new ways to increase scoring more and more.
I could care less that he was a vezina candidate in a half season. It was not due to his own play. It was due to the solid play in front of him that season. Niemi is average to below average. Always has been. Even when the Hawks swept us, I identified he was horrible at high shots. All 7 goals we scored that series were 18" above the ice and he looked lost and could not track the puck. The Chicago defense was able to force low shots all the time. I knew ours would not and was dismayed when they signed him.
I was right.
The reason we don't have more prospects coming up and more development is because of the win now mentality Wilson used to employ. He traded SO MANY picks for garbage that he left our cupboards barren. He has seen the error of those ways, and he stopped doing that (for the most part Kennedy and McGinn are still head scratchers).
This is the part where Wilson is an absolute moron. He occasionally made a great trade. A Blockbuster that improved the team. But usually, gave up picks for Garbage.
Who in their right mind thinks "We lack a right hand shot and offensive presence on the blueline. Let's trade a 1st and Gorges for Craig Rivet!"
Montreal fans were laughing at us then. It was soooo stupid. Max Pacioretty and Gorges for Rivet
Campbell was a good pickup mind you, but it was known then he wanted a big payday and most figured he would not be resigned. This same mentality is why I want to stay far away from Franson, who is nowhere near Campbell anyways.
And why. WHY WHY WHY trade a 1st(David Perron) + for 37 year old Bill Guerin???? Not only did we not need forward help. He was over the hill by a longshot, and we needed defensive help!
Trading for Wallin(Carolina's worst Dman) was so braindead that I still don't understand it. AND THEN HE RESIGNED HIM FOR MORE. People worry over giving a 2nd for a year of Talbot? Wilson rented Wallin for a 2nd. And yeah, White for the same price.
However, 2nd round picks for Dominic Moore, Ian White, etc...those are painful results for having a win NOW mentality. Shero trading 2 second round picks for Douglas Murray? Win NOW mentality. You should CONSTANTLY build towards the future, and if you continue that on a consistent basis you will get a good NHL team because of it. Like the Detroit Red Wings who transition from hall of famer to hall of famer and prospect to prospect because they constantly build for the future.
Those are constant reminders that better players got traded for less, and Wilson only traded for the dregs. Wilson's trades are STUPID. He is STUPID. Wilson should have been fired or removed from GM position.
