He's staying.

If Toronto was as far along in their rebuild as the Sabres, he might have gone there. Maybe he will eventually end up in TO when his next deal with the Wings expires.

I doubt he was ever that serious about the Buffalo option beyond Pegula's ability to increase his market value.

At least we can begin to discuss more realistic candidates for the Sabres job this week. I hope they cast a wide net.

I hope you are right, but I think it's just wishful thinking.

Honestly think it's a two horse race between Toronto and Detroit. Yes, Buffalo has the best stable of prospects in the league but Detroit has a very good pipeline as well and they are in a much better position to win right now. The big three still have a few good years left and you've got Nyquist/Tatar/Mrazek/Mantha/Larkin to build around. Don't see how he leaves home for potential success in Buffalo unless it's just about the money.

In Toronto it's simply about legacy. Winning there would be the biggest challenge obviously, but bringing a cup to TO would be monumental, way bigger than it would be anywhere else.

Garth take your blinders off, the odds of Babcock going to Buffalo are next to nothing, you are going to look awful foolish in a couple days, oh well, not the 1st time, lol

Then why is he dragging his feet? Also, Toronto needs to tear it down first. The Sabres already accomplished that.

He's not dragging his feet, he's just looking at his options and creating a bidding war for his services.

I doubt he was ever serious about the Sabres. He just wanted to pay a courtesy to GMTM and have the Pegulas raise his asking price.

No matter where Babcock goes, he has a long road ahead of him. Every team has its positives and negatives (some more than others). I think he stays in Detroit but wish otherwise. History ... Blah blah blah ... Money ... Blah blah blah ... Comes down to comfortability which = DETROIT.

At least we likely got a nice consolation prize when we lost out on getting McDavid.

Who is the coaching consolation prize for the Sabres?

Does Pegula go from pursuing the top coach in the league to allowing his GM to hire his guy, neophyte Luke Richardson? Such a move would represent an enormous step down in class.

I think that the Sabres have to consider known commodities for the job now that they have likely missed out on Babcock.

Dan Bylsma and Randy Carlyle have won a Cup each and should be among the top candidates for the job.

Never-won-anything retreads like Pete DeBoer, Guy Boucher, Claude Noel, Cory Clousten and Craig Hartsburg would be such uninspiring hires for this franchise.

That franchise is so dysfunctional. Carlyle deserves credit for actually having them in a playoff spot when he was fired. Look how they did without him?

I wouldn't hold coaching the Leafs against him or Ron Wilson. Instead, I would look at the success each had at their previous stops in the league.

If Babcock goes to St. Louis I hope Hitchcock is not on the Sabres list.

Luke Richardson may be a good coach, may develop into a very good coach, but hiring him now would be a hard sell to Sabres fans. The Sabres also need a name coach to help attract legitimate free agent upgrades.

I could ask you the same question since you're so sure he's headed to Buffalo.

I'd take Hitch in a heart beat if we cant land Babs......if you don't want Richardson for the reasons you stated that's fine, but isn't Hitch the opposite of Richardson, thus the type of coach we'd want?

So if he's sure to go to Buffalo why is he dragging his feet? Please refer me to the post which addresses the question. Thanks!

Honestly I just want this over with. Would love it if he comes here. My money is either Buffalo or staying in Detroit. I don't fear him in Toronto as they have a year or two of dismantling before they can start building. By that time in theory of course Eichel and Reinhart should be in true form and the Sabres will be talked about as a team fully on the rise, no more potentially on the rise stuff.
