This is a conversation for like... 2020, maybe.

Not sure it changes much for the next 4-5 years.

HAHA, right on. It would have been great to have him in Buffalo but hey he wanted more roster control and Murray stuck to his guns. This seemed more about control than money. The leafs give up a 3rd round pick and the team is really no better on the ice today than yesterday.

This means a better rivalry no doubt! I'm up for anything that increases rivalry between any team in the league those games are the games that matter the most. That being said, Therrien is a good coach, Babckok is the much better coach. What it means for the Habs, facing a tougher team than before.

He's a great coach and the Leafs will eventually benefit from that.

I wouldn't say that it would take 5 years... the magic number thrown around these days along rebuilds are 3 years.

You do know that the coaches don't actually play hockey...right?

I truly believe that this is the first positive move of an extremely busy offseason for the Leafs to come.

Come December, we won't recognize this team.

While they won't be world beaters, they will probably be a heck of a lot more competitive.

This just screws up their rebuild. Just another band-aid solution for the Leafs when it appeared that they were finally going to do the full on rebuild they desperately needed. Babcock is a fantastic coach, and that's just it. They won't be able to tank properly with him making them competitive every season, and without that proper rebuild it's back to being a bubble team every year. Buffalo is ready to right the ship now, they got their pieces. Babcock made a mistake in not choosing them.

I am sure he knows the next 3 years will not be including the playoffs . He is a smart coach and the leafs are in the midst of a very open and honest rebuild phase. He doesnt have the pieces to make them "competitive" for the next few seasons. He, and the current management co. have a vision and know it will be a slow process.

Right now, this just shows that MLSE are serious about establishing a solid managerial core - we cant throw money at patch players anymore but we can spend a fortune on management.

The leafs will be true bottom 5 for the next 2-3 years - but once the pieces are in play through drafting and then acquiring - years 4-8 on Babcocks watch is where he'll get his glory.

He's a good coach, but he isn't going to be a magician. He has nothing to work with. In Detroit he had datsyuk and Zetterberg, and a bunch of young guys that are good players. Is Babcock going to turn phaneuf into a top 2 d man like he gets paid? Or turn Tyler bozak into a legit #1 centre. Coaching wasn't their biggest problem. It was the personnel on the ice. Everyone gives him credit for the 2 gold medals, but the fact is any of the 30 head coaches could of came home with gold with those dream teams.

I'm not making it up..

Chempionat.com (via Habs Eyes On The Prize): recently claimed a source close to Montreal Canadiens winger Alex Galchenyuk said the restricted free agent is close to continuing his professional career in the KHL.

It means another chef in the Toronto kitchen bringing in new philosophies, and delaying an actual rebuild in Toronto.
