I agree, it's a risky move. But do you move him and get an established C, a top prospect and two mid level prospects or do you risk losing him to an offer sheet for a late 1st, 2nd and 3rd?
Me, I'd take what Chicago did. They're looking at their salary structure and Saad's demands and saying he doesn't fit, let's move him now and get a package we feel helps us, rather than either paying him another team's price or losing him for pre-determined picks. - Jsaquella
And again: We're just debating it, because it's interesting
I am certainly not saying you and others are wrong, and that I am right
Obviously, it remains to be seen, and Chicago has won Cups
It's just bizarre to me that Saad is the one who is gone -- 22 years old

Meh, I'm really not sure losing him hurts them that much. Not having him eat up a huge % of their cap space might actually prove to be a boon down the road. They've got a lot of kids they can plug in right away.
It's completely different from Hamilton in that wingers are a lot less important that 1st-pair RH dmen. - Tomahawk
And if keeping Saad now forced them to lose Seabrook next summer... |

OMG HE WAS RIGHT... FLYERS GOT KESSEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nah.. he's just been stalking NHL insiders on twitter and posting transactions as they happen. - Doc_Sarcasm
him coming here would be like ruchards and carter sharing the samebody... the media and fans would cause me to have uncontrollable vomitting on a semi-weekly basis. |

It is a bit bizarre, but that's the kind of stuff that happens under a capped world. I'm sure they'll make other moves.

Richards under investigation by RCMP for off ice incident
The same RCMP that ignored Edmonton Oiler players (Grant Fuhr and likely others) cocaine use in 1986-87 that was widely known, even written about in Sports Illustrated that season. They said they found no evidence.... HA
I guess if you dont play with the next one or the great one, you dont get immunity. |

Who do you think got the best player in the deal? - MJL
Saad's the best player, and while I won't lie and say that I've seen Marko Dano enough to know what his true upside is, I KNOW that Saad is a legit first-line winger

There's two things that I would hate more.
If they got Phaneuf.
If they got Phaneuf AND Kessel.
I've said it before. Phil Kessel played for us in 88-89 and 89-90, only he called himself Mike Bullard back then.
At that time, the price was Peter Zezel. When we shipped Mr. Bullard out, we sent him to Toronto for some guy named F. Considerations. |

Jeff Carter was the best player in the deal when he was traded to Columbus. Mike Richards was the best player in the deal when he was traded to LA. Sometimes trading the best player in the deal ends up making the team better in the long run. |

Now, I can see this argument, because it's true that you have to be careful in how much you allocate to wingers
But again, you sure didn't have a problem dropping cash on Hossa, Kane, Bickell and Sharp when you wanted to wrap them up

Hands down. All they got for Ladd was Ivan Vishnevskiy and a 2nd rounder. - Jsaquella
Speaking of Andrew Ladd, is he available? He has one more year on his deal. |

He is, and with regards to the point made about losing Seabrooke, we discussed a similar situation earlier. Move players on your own terms, not forced by somebody else such as a threat of an offer sheet. Sign Saad, and then take the Summer to try and get the best deal for your team. The Seabrooke situation is a year away, there is plenty of time to work that out. GM's are making suspect deals for the wrong reasons. Need to get more for a player like Saad in my opinion. Dano could turn into a stud, and that would make me wrong about it. I'd take my chances with Saad. I'd rather make a bad deal in trading Sharp, then a bad deal in trading a 22 year old player.

Brandon Saad, elite winger, had 5 more points than Brayden Schenn last season. |

I'm really surprised that the Richards reporting has died down. What happens if the investigation comes up empty and no charges filed? Then what? How could LA get away with that?

Which is why I'm one of the few who is still on board with the Hartnell trade. Yes, the short term pain is excruciating, but Hartnell wasnt the difference between missing the playoffs and winning the Cup.

A bit different landscape tho... the cap increase used to be able to be counted on to absorb big leaps in salaries for your own guys. Ain't so anymore.

Who on this board thinks that the Flyers could've traded Brayden Schenn for Brandon Saad? I mean after all, there was only 5 points separating them! |

I think Hartnell is the difference between making the playoffs and not making the playoffs. No doubt. |

They missed the playoffs due to having a terrible PK which Hartnell had nothing to do with.

If the rumours of Saad's demands are true, yes I think we could have did one for one straight up. I also think Chicago could correct any short comings he might have. |

It's far more then that. The cap is really doing what it's supposed to do, which is keep teams from stockpiling players, and spreading talent around the league. The Hawks also have to deal with bonus issues, from winning the Cup.
