NHL officials have been notified that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigation into ex-L.A. Kings player Mike Richards involves the prescription drug oxycodone ... multiple sources tell TMZ Sports.

Our sources say Richards was stopped while crossing from the United States into Canada on June 17th ... and we're told he was questioned about oxycodone pills, a powerful painkiller.

For the record, Richards has NOT been charged with a crime.

However, he has since been cut from the team for "a material breach of the requirements of his Standard Player's Contract."

We reached out to Richards' agent for comment multiple times but haven't heard back. Canadian officials refused to comment, citing privacy laws.

But a rep for the NHL Players Association tells us, "We are in the process of reviewing the facts and circumstances of this matter, and will discuss the situation with the player in order to determine the appropriate course of action."

The entire thing is extremely suspect. I have no idea how they void the contract without Richards having his day in court. How can that be an air tight maneuver by the team and the league?

I listened to a lawyer on TSN radio yesterday talk about how hard it's been for sports teams to terminate contracts. He said some baseball player got caught smuggling cocaine and they still couldn't void his deal.

Maybe if he had a trunk full. Otherwise, I don't see it sticking either.

If it does there's going to be an open door on terminations around the league.

You know what baffles me about that?

I don't think drug dogs can sniff out painkillers like Oxycodone -- did the guy have a trunk full sitting open on his front seat?

That's weird

Yup. White played really well last year. Was pleasantly surprised by him.

Tomorrow will probably be quiet. Get MDZ squared away, add a backup goalie and get ready for camp. Gagner upgrades the offense a bit.

The termination is nothing more than the Kings taking a shot at saving themselves millions of real dollars, not cap space. My gut feeling is the Kings are going to lose in the long run.

TMZ is reporting there was some sort of drama at the Canadian border with Richards and Oxycodone.

Hard to say without knowing the specifics of his contract.

It would have to be a situation where one, he doesn't have a legitimate script for it, and he had such a high amount that he'd be under the suspicion of intent to distribute. He's a hockey player, so having pain killers isn't unusual.

I just can't understand how LA and the league can terminate, before the investigation is complete or any charges or filed. Voynov has been arrested and charged with a crime, and he was suspended.

It wouldn't be about the specifics of his contract. An SPC is a standard form that all players sign with the same language in it. It's exhibit 1 of the CBA. The only thing is specific to each player is term, bonuses, money, movement clauses, etc.

Hexy strikes again. To have our entire 4th line signed for 2.225M for the next 2 years is pretty awesome.

So including our 1st round picks... Hexy is 6/6 so far. Provorov/Konecny/Gagner/Rinaldo/White/CVV.

I would say it's both cap space and real dollars. The Kings wanted the cap space heading into free agency, which makes the timing and rush suspicious.

Man -- you know, that would be the tragedy

Not if he's an addict because he parties with cocaine and Ecstasy

But if it's because he played a rugged game at a smaller size, and his body is in pain a lot, and he got hooked
