It would have to be a situation where one, he doesn't have a legitimate script for it, and he had such a high amount that he'd be under the suspicion of intent to distribute. He's a hockey player, so having pain killers isn't unusual.

I just can't understand how LA and the league can terminate, before the investigation is complete or any charges or filed. Voynov has been arrested and charged with a crime, and he was suspended.

Guess this was the last straw. I guessing mikes drug usage is well documented, by the kings. They've tried for years to deal and feel confortable with terminating his contract.

Generally, if you have enough of a substance on your person to warrant that charge, you get charged. If a cop stops a guy with a pound of weed, he's getting charged in all likelihood.

I think that the Kings might regret this, if all it is was Richards being questioned about having oxy, but not being charged.

Yes, it is all quite confusing. It is going to get very interesting as this plays out.

According to the reports I've seen, it was oxycodine.

The Kings probably looked at this as a way to get out from Richards contract. If Richards was still playing well, there is no way the Kings would have handled it like this.

If they knew he had a drug issue, he should have been placed in a rehab program, and or suspended until he did so. The NHL has drug and health programs for their players.
If the Kings knew about a drug issue for years, and enabled him in the past by not doing anything about it, then they share liability here in my opinion.

Yeah, who knows, maybe he des get charged...but off this little bit of info, it seems hard to justify allowing a termination

All this wheeling and dealing is fun. Ek says Oilers working on a big deal. A 3 for 3 swap with an EC team. The suspense. Could it be the Flyers?

You can suspend the player, and force him to either get it taken care of, or suffer the consequences. If a player had a pain killer addiction from playing hockey, the goal should be to get that straightened out, not to get out of the contract. There are programs for issues like this. There isn't any evidence of that being attempted before a termination, that I'm aware of.

I agree with other that say the optics are that Voynov, who has been arrested and charged with a crime, has only been suspended. He's still a good player, while Richards, who to my knowledge has not been charged with anything, has had his contract terminated, and is not considered a player worthy of his contract anymore.

I think he signs a back-up goalie, maybe a middle six forward-even that last one is up in the air since they've decided to keep Gagner.

Now, later in the summer, who knows? Maybe he can move Vinny after the bonus is paid and swing a deal. Maybe he trades another D-man and has a bit of cash to target an arbitration award walk away situation.
