So charges could well be pending, which certainly would help the Kings' case for termination. - Jsaquella
Still have to wonder if the NHLPA files a grievance to let this play out. Wasn't Voynov charged? |

I'm sure they will file a grievance. They pretty much have to, even if it's to provide precedent for future incidents. Teams will start combing through everything if a guy with a long term deal show signs of slipping or what have you. |

That's the big question, why the inconsistency? Voynov was arrested and charged, yet no termination.

The league is either going to have let the Kings die in cap hell or let teams start buying out at will without cap ramification. Some type of reform is needed here. Player A suffers career ending injury "you're stuck with him". Player B breaks the law "here's your cap space back." |

Yes. Obviously the Kings were trying to either trade or buy out Richards when they discovered the incident, so they decided to take full advantage of the information to save themselves a cap mess that a buy out would have caused.
Call it hypocrisy or a double standard, but obviously the Kings felt that Voynov could still be an effective NHLer and worth his contract so they didn't terminate the deal. They felt Richards could no longer live up to his deal and are attempting to take advantage of a situation that might save them millions of dollars. The inconsistency is due to one is seen as a still very viable NHLer and the other is seen as not being worth his contract. Simple as that.
Maybe that's being a incredibly ruthless and cold, but that's why they're doing what they are doing. If Richards was still a 25 goal 70 point player, I'm sure they'd be standing behind him and saying things like, "We stand behind Mike and will wait for the outcome of the case before taking any action. We will follow any guidelines from the NHL as we proceed" and would not be so quick to terminate. |

Richards has not been charged. A person with OxyContin pills and no prescription could face smuggling charge under the Customs Act... 1/2..
2/2... or possession charges under the Criminal Code's Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. OxyContin is a narcotic pain reliever. - ob18
"could face"
If that's all it is (possession w/o prescription) I find it hard to believe the LA Kings don't have the resources to get him back and deal with it as they've dealt with the wife beater and the cokehead.
This stinks of desperation cap relief. |

That was going to be my next comment.
I was going to throw in an "NHL: oh, and we'll hire him while you suffer the cap." |

I don't know, I view it as player A, who we like, and think is still a good player, broke the law, so we'll just suspend him and see what happens. Player B, who we don't think is a good player anymore, and want to get rid of, broke the law, so we'll terminate his contract.

If Vincent Lecavalier got busted tomorrow with a load of Oxy, would you be upset if the Flyers terminated his contract?
It's obviously a deliberate move, an certainly ruthless. But teams make ruthless moves all the time |

Controlled Substance abuse act states the following regarding Schedule 2 drugs (which is Oxycontin):
1. You MUST have a prescription (obviously)
2. You CANNOT refill this prescription; if more is needed, you must consult a doctor for another prescription to give to the pharmacy. Each prescription can only be for a 30 day supply.
3. Physicians are allowed to write 3 prescriptions for a patient (in essence a 90 day supply) but each prescription must be presented respectively, one a time, and each prescription has a "earliest fill date" to it. I'm pretty sure you can't fill 2 prescriptions for Schedule 2 drugs within a 30 day period.
Take that for what it's worth. Speculate away. |

If you are found in possession of a Schedule 1 or Schedule 2 drug, such as OxyContin or Dilaudid, you could be faced with the following penalties:
Possession of 1,000 grams or more is a felony and can result in a life sentence.
Possession between 450 – 1000 grams is a 30-year felony.
Possession between 50 – 450 grams is a 20-year felony.
Possession of less than 50 grams is a 4-year felony. |

I think there is a big difference between a ruthless maneuver that is just business, versus an outright double standard that may even be fraudulent, and unlawful, and certainly without due process. |

My problem is the Kings are allowed to spend the cap space when he hasn't even been formally charged
You want to terminate? Fine. But that should come after a period of time that includes the ability to file the grievance
This is absolute bullpoop because they were up against the cap, totally screwed, and now they get to spend money even though a grievance could still be filed -- and he could win |
