The Laffs are eating 15% of Kessels contract on top of getting a dog poop return? Thats rich.
- PLindbergh31

The Leafs are going to try and dump Dion now or some point during season. Have a Sht season.. Get a good draft pick and then have some cash to land some big free agents next year!

Not a huge return but I think Kessel needed to go
- PhillySportsGuy

Definitely needed to go for the team to rebuild. Phaneuf probably has to go too.

I think the small return is due to Kessel's NMC and thus choice of team he is traded to and a limited market for kessel at his cap hit

I don't think Phaneuf is going yet. Just a guess but I believe they hold him for at least another year.

Maybe but they will move him eventually. It probably will be this summer or next.

Agreed. It's not like they got nothing for him. They just didn't get a high impact prospect

Yeah im not a huge fan of the return. Harrington and Kapanen I dont see as that special. The 2016 first is a nice addition.

If (and thats a big IF) this deal works out for the penguins and Kessel produces and the team makes a run next spring, Rutherford will look like a genius for getting Kessel for this price

I think they needed to move one of them. Kessel is gone so I think they feel they can lay back and let the offers for Phaneuf come to them. He's not going to be so overpaid by next off season and there will be a year less on his contract. Plus they can give Babcock a season with him. Just my thoughts.

I don't understand how the Pens are going to be able to field much of a team beyond just a few players. They are pretty tight against the cap and are 7 players short of a roster.

Paul Martin deal $4.45 AAV

Not bad for Sharks. They have a real solid lineup

- PhillySportsGuy

Good thing we locked up AMac ons friendly deal prior to Ufa its deals like this that really give pause. The guy only averaged 24 min of ice time in the playoffs

Thats true. Maybe he might be more valuable by next season. Toronto is clearly dismantling their old core and I think Phaneuf as captain has to be moved. I think Toronto's management realizes the team needs better leadership and a new voice

I don't see how this works out for the Pens. It's so much money committed to only 4 players. Their bottom 6 and bottom 4 defenseman are going to be crushed
