Normally I wouldn't think Niquist going to arbitration is a big deal but considering we have him and others in need of contract and very little cap space to keep them.
Thus is really going to put pressure on holland to trade someone who's actually being a bit paid this year |

From what I read there is 6 mil in cap space, with Nyquist, Ferraro and Pelky to sign. I also read today Ferraro has signed a 1 yr deal worth 600k, so I'm assuipming they should get Nyquist done in the 4.5 mil range..... Leaving enough for Pelky, but I will say, they would want some flexibility.... So I can still see a body moved out somewhere. My guess is Smith/Kindly or even a depth forward like Miller for a pick to create room. |

Jurco is also an RFA |

I asked the question of Nyquist at the end of the last blog after hearing he had filed. With the recent contracts given to Saad and ROR, the Rangers/fans have been speculating what Stephan will want/get (he filed as well)-- which led me to wonder what Nyquist is asking.
Ferraro can be sent down, so his 600 won't necessarily count against the cap.
Pulkinen can't be sent down. I would think he signs a contract like Sheehan for around a mil per.
Jurco didn't help his cause with his struggles last season but probably is in the same neighborhood.
As for cap space, the question remains what Nyquist will get. Tatar is 2.75 but is that a fair comparable after these recent contracts by other teams?
Depending on if Datsyuk can start the season and the ever elusive question of Franzen's status, once players can be put on LTIR it may not be a problem.

One clarifying note: even if Franzen needs LTIR the Wings will still need to be under the cap on day 1 of the season, including him. At that point he gets placed on injured reserve and only then can the Red Wings exceed the cap.

With Ferraro, Miele, Oulette, and Marchenko having the ability to play in GR that gives the Wings an additional $2,511,667 towards the salary cap bringing their total cap space to $6,760,455.
I'm curious to see if the Wings trade a defenseman (Jakub Kindl) to open up more cap space and also give Marchenko/Oulette a realistic shot at getting NHL minutes.
Right now I see the Wings starting with these lines come opening night:
Nyquist-Zetterberg-Abdelkader
Helm-Richards-Tatar
Jurco-Sheahan-Pulkinnen
Miller-Glendening-Andersson/Ferraro
Kronwall-Ericsson
DeKeyser-Green
Quincey-Smith
Howard
Mrazek
LTIR: Franzen
I think it's safe to assume the Wings are done in free agency. I'm guessing Nyquist is going to receive a two-year deal worth 4.25 per year. It would be nice if he signed a bridge deal similar to Tatar's but that's not going to happen with the way people are spending money in free agency. If Beleskey can get 5 years @ 3.8 per than Nyquist should be able to swing a nice raise.
Pulks and Jurco should both be around $900,000 per year.
Just my two cents. |

Looks about right to me. Then with Datsyuk just slide helm and Jurco down a line and drop andy out. I think they will likely make a trade just because holland said that one of Oulette Sproul or Marchenko would be in the lineup. If I had my way it would be Ericsson but I won't hold my breath. It's interesting to see how blashill she's R see players differently because he coached them in GR. Will be interesting to see how his handling of guys like Jurco, pulkinen etc differ from babs
Prospects I wanna see: Athanasiou, bertuzzi, Larkin, mantha, Sproul

I was at the rookie scrimmage on Saturday in TC and Larkin is an absolute beast.
Mantha was a force from the offensive blue line in and Bertuzzi was just all over the place causing havoc. Bert had a better scoring touch than I expected.
Honestly, I thought Svechnikov looked more NHL ready than Mantha. Same could be said for Axel Holmstrom who looked very comfortable playing with Larkin and Svechnikov.
Turgeon looked like a solid two-way center and Natasiuk was another solid forward.
Defensively, Hicketts, McNulty, de Haas, and Saarijavi looked the strongest. Jarett Meyer was HUGE but was easily muscled off the puck.
Jake Patterson was the best goaltender out there. He looks ready for the Griffins. van Pottelberghe was a BIG goalie, his lower back hit the cross bar. |

Agreed, that's why I said "once players can be put on LTIR".
It still comes down to what Nyquist will get. |

Thanks for the updates
It's hard to know when I don't get to see them and I just read people opinions so it's noce to hear from fans who get to see them in person
Side note! We all know the wings have to make a trade. Too many young forwards and too many Dmen on the roster this year. What would you like to see and who would you trade. The only real untouchables for me are larking and Tatar. Nyquist has shown that he can be shut down...he needs to learn how to play bigger and for that reason I would be okay packaging him for a solid dman. Jurco is another guy who seems the odd man out, but maybe not with Blash. Could package nyquist, Jurco, Ericsson and kindl .... Could probably get something decent for that. Clears up a roster spot for Oulette/Sproul/Marchenko and also bring in an upgrade over big E

a trade i would like to see would be an actual package for 1 really really good player, idk who may be available so im not going to specify who for who, but what i mean is dont trade down, or trade a decent roster guy for a draft pick simply to get rid of them (unless its kindl, then its ok)

with the signing of Green and Richards, management seems to be trying to win now while we still have Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Kronwall. I don't see them going for picks.
We have too many defenseman right now and we probably need a better top 4 defenseman. Kindl, Smith or Ericsson won't fetch much even in a 2 for 1 deal. I can see one of our prospects packaged in a deal. Kindl, Smith & Marchenko for ??? |

That's a lot of defenseman for one package. I was thinking more Jurco, Ericsson, Oulette and Kindl for a big forward. I don't think they need to trade for a Dman cause that would conflict them trying to open up a roster spot on D |

You are probably right but we have too many Defenseman right now. No place for Ouellet or Marchenko. I'm not even sure if they can be sent down without clearing waivers, which you know they wouldn't clear.
Their isn't that many spots for forwards either but we can keep them in Grand Rapids for most of the year. |

Ouellet and Marchenko are still exempt from waivers until 2016.

I think it's too early to start talking trades. This team will function a lot different under Blashill. Injuries are going to happen as well. The most intriguing thing to me in terms of players is how Jurco, Smith, and Kindle respond to Blashill's coaching and/or more opportunities to play. Holland needs to figure out in a hurry which young defensemen / prospects will get moved. Sproul has totally fallen off the depth chart in GR.
I'm glad Babcock is gone... because putting a gifted offensive player like Jurco on the 4th line makes no sense. You can't clip his wings and still expect him to light it up playing with Glendening on the 4th line. |

Kronwall, Ericsson, Dekeyser, Green, Quincey, Smith, Kindl ... Judging by KH comments one of Sproul, Marchy or Oulette will be on the team next year. Meaning one of these Dmen will need to be moved (leaving Kindl likely as 7th) If I had my way it would be Kindl and Ericsson leaving then I'd play
Kronwall-Dekeyser
Quincey-Green
Marchenko-Smith
Upfront we still need size in our top 6. I would likely to package Nyquist, Ericsson, Kindl + for a guy with size and skill like Nash (or someone who uses their size more) I love Nyquist but his size seems to really hold him back. A guy like Tatar can play bigger than he is and remain relevant in playoffs where Nyquist seems to disappear. This would allow
Tatar-Pav-Nash
Z-Richards-Abby
Helm-Shea
The rest are all ??? beacause I'd love if a guy like Larkin could make it but other than those guys and maybe Miller/Glendening I'm not even gonna try and predict. Also it doesnt need to be Nash his name was just inserted because he fits a similar mold to what I think they need. Nyquist, Ericsson, Kindl, Jurco could be enough to get Nash or someone equivalent. That would give us a really really solid line up. If you dont wanna get a forward then the same package could be had for an Ericsson replacement and then we would just have to slide someone to 7th... |

I do agree its early but it's fun to speculate and play what if's. I just like to think about what I would do. It is a little different than most years because We have far too many prospects that will need to be moved. There is already too many Dmen this year with Marchy let alone Sproul and Oulette. Then with Bertuzzi, Larkin, Mantha, Athanasiou, Holmstrom,.....oh my....that's a headache...they are gonna have to figure that out. With a need to replace Ericsson (at least imo) and a need for scoring and size in the top 6...there should be a recipe for a trade or two! |
