Did you really see Bonino long term here? He was getting demoted this year, what about when McCann and Cassels are ready? - VANTEL
That's not my issue with this. It's Benning overpaying without good reason.
I don't see Sutter as someone to build around either |

If Benning values Sutter over Bonino, because he's better in the faceoff circle, at a million dollars more a season he's a total (frank)in idiot.

Well there goes that theory. And it hurts the clearing up cap space theory since Sutter will make more than Bonino this year and next. - Nucker101
$21m x 5 for Sutter I'd say. NTC?? |

The expiring contract theory makes no sense. Bonino makes 1.9M per, that's very affordable and easy to trade and arguably more valuable since he's signed through next year while Sutter if traded will be valued as a rental and will be costly to re-sign.
Makes little sense. - Nucker101
I'd say less valuable, because he's going to be looking for a huge upgrade on his contract whereas Sutter won't have as much leverage to say he was massively underpaid. But whatever, I don't understand the move, I freely admit it. It makes no sense unless something else is in the pipe and he's stockpiling assets for the TDL. If not, then yeah, I'll start getting on the side of wanting to get rid of Benning as a GM.
I've defended Benning because I don't see him as a long term solution and I don't expect him to last past the Sedins retirement. That's only because he wasn't hurting us by signing players to contracts that were going to last longer than the Sedins who weren't Horvat, Tanev, JV, McCann etc. Now I have to start questioning him and wonder what his plan is. |

Depends upon individual perception.
Gillis refused to move core players while shipping out picks/prospects at the deadline for a kick at the can.
Benning has shipped off "core" players to a fault but at the very least is shaking things up for better or worse. - Whiskey-Tango
Yeah, but he's shipped them off for a minimal return at best. |

There's a difference between a mission statement, like "To win the Stanley Cup" and a business strategy. - 1970vintage
Yes, of course, but if you are a company looking for public investors you don't put out a general statement like "we are going to be the best" and expect people to throw money at you.
Got to provide people reasons to invest. Got to lay that plan out so investors have confidence that they are backing a winner. Short term or long term doesn't matter as long as there is a viable plan in place. |

That's a list of very mediocre NHL players, one has yet to make the NHL...hardly a big loss.
Still - I have no idea what they're trying to do??? - LeftCoaster
Remember the other day when I said JB had to take the temptation away from WD to play certain players in a manner that will get in the way of players like Horvat moving up? It like he's been doing that. Something Gillis should have been doing to AV.
Bonino was only in Horvats way. Now Horvat looks like a lock for 2nd C. This will most likely give Cassels a spot opportunity the following season.
People forget that we didnt get these players for Kesler because that was JB's desired targets. That was the package available for the only team that Kesler wanted that also wanted him...
JB isnt holding out for a better position in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. He's making the moves... situations for Corrado and Horvat have improved now.
I really do hope JB can do better at TDL. His returns have not been very good... still, he is making progress on the transition. |

I don't for the life of me know what he saw in that kid? He (frank)ed that one up by A) requesting him in the deal & B) by signing him to a three year deal at way more than he's worth.
A one year qualifying offer was all he needed to do with him. |

Tried to warn ya - Nucker101
He's brought in more youth to the franchise in one year than Gillis did in five years. Ultimately that'll set up the franchise long term if he can get a few of those young players to stick...that's what I'm hoping for. |
