Thing is, when you're on the bubble and a prospect is outplaying you, that's when you're in trouble (see Vey, Corrado). It's one thing to not try 100 percent if you're the Sedins, Burrows, Horvat, Vrbata who're guaranteed a spot regardless. It's a whole other ball of wax when you're not guaranteed a spot and are getting outplayed by a prospect who's still junior eligible and it's the last week of preseason as well.

Again, I think it's great that McCann, Hutton, Gaunce and JV are all making the Higgins, Vey, Corrado and Baertschi's of the world sweat. They are replaceable, and I take JB and TL at their words when they say if a prospect plays himself onto the team, they'll do what it takes to open a spot.

- DariusKnight

Thing is, I'm referring to the fact that we have some prospects who are showing very well by playing against the opposition's veterans, who aren't trying 100%.

Vey, Corrado and Baertschi have another week to prove they deserve ice time. I think Baertschi makes Vey redundant and I think Vey is useless as a 4th liner. Trade him or waive him. Corrado deserves a shot, even if Hutton has outplayed him for a week.

Any of the aging veterans not trying needs to give their head a shake. We had 5 first round picks at camp trying to steal their jobs. 30 years ago they were safe. These days not so much . The NHL game now is set up for players 24-30 not 30-36

I couldn't care less if the Sedins, Miller, Vrbata, Hamhuis, etc. put in 100% in a preseason game or not, as long as they do what they need to do to be prepared for the start of the real season.

Kenins has done nothing to show he deserves a spot. No problem sending him to Utica.

Same with Vey, although I'd be ok putting him in the press box and making him work his ass off to earn some ice time on one of the to 3 lines. If they have him penciled in for the 4th line they should try and move him or try to send him to Utica.

Hutton is proving to be better than Weber, but what will help his development the most? Playing 24 minutes in Utica until someone gets hurt, or until the TDL, or playing 12 minutes in Vancouver?

the problem is I think Vey is giving 100% and he is getting out played by the guys coming up. The weight he gained has had a negative affect for sure.

I have to go with whomever is playing better. As far as hutton goes I think the small minutes could ease him into the Nhl better. I feel that hutton in the AHL or the NHL wouldn't be bad either way.

From what I've seen so far and also read about him, no I don't. I'd say they're in the same tier.

We lost a little bit of potential offense (via Bonino) for defensive awareness and faceoffs (then again, he's not been as advertised in that department) at a higher cost and for long term.

Sutter is better than Bonino. Bonino was crap. He skates fast, is ok defensively, and provides crap offense. Bonino is Mason Raymond if he played center.

I am hoping we will look back after he has a good start and say it was just preseason and getting the different systems WD employs.

Everyone says don't get too excited either way, I hope guys can hit the ground running when the season starts.

Its so hard to gauge when watching him on TV, but I swear there are some guys in my Beer Hockey League that skate faster and better than Bonino...

The clock is ticking, I think, for Vey, Kenins and Corrado.

Vote on whether you think Corrado'd get picked up on waivers in the new blog:

He skates like Jiri Hudler and Frans Nielsen. Some of the worst looking skaters in the league.

Absolutely ridiculous how terrible he skates...I believe the team will benefit just due to how much faster the additions will make them. It had to be difficult for guys to play with him as he slows the entire game down

You're misinterpreting. I'm referring to the opposition's veterans not trying very hard. That's why we always see some prospects stand out at training camp, especially at the start.

Them having a great week or two is certainly reason for optimism, but our fan base has a history of anointing players as the next coming after they've had a few solid outings in meaningless games.

Bonino was a horrible skater...plus he was a liability in the defensive zone. Sutter will bring much more to the team than Bonino once he gets set with the right linemates.

Hutton will get his starts when one of the d men gets injured... i'd rather have him stay up with the club as a reward for solid play and then get his games in when one of the guys goes down to injury or is playing poorly, rather than have him be the first call up.... the guy deserves to be with the club if he's earned it in camp and preseason....

if one of the dmen has a few shiite games in a row, you put Hutton in. it'll keep the pressure on every guy to perform. if they don't perform for a 2-3 games in a row, put them in the box and dress the guy who is waiting his turn to get in.

- kaptaan

This is the dumbest thing I have read in a long time. yes lets have a prospect who has good potential do nothing but sit on his a$$ in hopes the an injury happens and he plays a game, rather than put him into the AHL for a season, play big minutes and likely be ready for a top 4 role next year(well compared to Weber/bart/Sbisa)
