I think there is a trade market for a player of Matt Read's skill set, but by no means do I think Matt Read is the best trade target for another team. If I was one of the other (29) NHL teams, why would I give up assets for Read when I could acquire a cheaper player of the same skill set? The only way you make a deal for a player with an additional 2 years on his contract is if you want him to be a part of your core or he comes so ridiculously cheap that it makes sense to do so.
My point about the free agents is that an open market showed the value of these types of players, and pretty much all of them were signed to friendlier deals. So again, why would a team trade for Matt Read when they could choose from several other players on better deals.
note: I am not saying trading Matt Read is impossible, I think it is harder than most think and will bring back a smaller than expected return or require retained salary - YuenglingJagr
I would reply and continue the conversation, but based on other conversations, and you're reply earlier, it seems as though there is an issue with handling that, so I'll just say I don't agree with all of your points, and move on.

Inept Management is a huge reason why this franchise is without a Cup for 40 years with no end in sight. Financial advantage over majority of the NHL forever, and haven't been able to take advantage of it. |

I think he's a good player to have in your bottom 6. He stands out for us because he is fast on a team that is not terribly fast. - johndewar
He's a player who is a good skater, can handle the puck, plays good defensively and can play on the PK. More of quarter-a-dozen as opposed to a dime-a-dozen type of player. |

Right this moment 2.5 might look bad but I think AMac is better than a cheap rookie or vet and a competitive team might want to have a more reliable 5th or 6th defensemen. Around 3million is certainly reasonable for AMac I believe - YuenglingJagr
If other teams really felt AMac was that reliable, he would already be gone at 1/2 price. |

Same with Toronto. The Rangers have 1 Cup in, what, 70 years? Boston never won one pre-cap since the Flyers won theirs. I guess all of those teams were ineptly managed as well since they had as much and/or more money to throw around. |

I think you are a smart guy that knows a lot about hockey and team management, I just don't think you are as correct as you think you are on certain things. Isn't the point of the blog to discuss that?
For example, we both know there are ways to work around the bad contracts and think that there are ways out of the cap situation that minimize the damage to the Flyers, but we disagree on how possible some of those options are |

Rangers and Bruins have won more recently than the Flyers have. If you want to use Toronto as a measuring stick that's fine. Pretty sad to be lumped in with them. |

Maybe Hextall doesnt want to retain salary until he has to, or that other teams still dont want to take on that many years of AMac. Doesnt mean that he cant in the future, when he may need to or the salary owed is smaller |

I think the worst of them are right now and this offseason, pending who will be resigned and at what value. You can't deny that it isn't overblown though |

I thought we were only talking pre-cap as financial advantage decreases in a cap world. And as I said, NY won one Cup in 75 years. What are their excuses for the other 74? Similarly, Boston has won one Cup in 39 years. Were the ineptly managed for the other 38? |

AMac is a quality 4/5 defenseman who is slighlty overpaid, if at all.
Mike Richards does not have substance issues. |

If you want to have a discussion, I'm all for it, but don't respond with "You know what, you are right....that is what I was forgetting. So simple" because you don't like or agree with a response. If that's the kind of discussion you want to have, I'm not interested. |

In my book winning in 1994, and 2011 is better than not winning since 1975. I could be wrong though. |

I don't disagree. But your point was that, despite being able to spend more freely that most teams, they have been ineptly managed. My point is that, if that's the case, would you same the same goes for the teams I mentioned who experienced similar and/or longer droughts? |
