Do you think Linden and Benning still think this team is contender for a playoff spot?
- PetrolSexual
They are well past it. Even the Aguafeenis will come around on drafting/developing.
No choice. |

The Canucks are in big trouble. As I type this, they are down 5-1 against the Wild. The Canucks are failing everywhere, from goaltending to scoring to face-offs. Injuries are not the issue here. Consistency is the problem; from management to the players.
Benning needs to blow this team up. This "re-tooling on the fly" concept isn't working. Yes, the Canucks would like to win now when they have the Sedins still in good form. I don't think they necessarily have to do a full rebuild (that will come after the Sedins retire), but maybe the remainder of this season could be a mini, interim rebuild. Trades need to happen. I have been saying for at least 2 years now that Edler needs to be traded. So does Higgins. And maybe Vrbata and Markstrom. I don't really care for the potential of bringing in Luke Schenn. That rumour has been around for years. I would love to bring in someone like Flyers dman Shayne Gostisbehere or Sabres centreman Sam Reinhart. Other targets could include Canes centre Victor Rask &
Definitely Trade:
----------------------------
1) Edler
2) Higgins
3) Baertschi
4) Burrows
5) Weber
6) Vey
7) Fedun
Possibly Trade:
---------------------------
1) Markstrom
2) Vrbata
3) Jensen
4) Dorsett
5) Jones
6) Gaunce
Targets:
----------------
1) D - Gostisbehere (PHI)
2) C - Reinhart (BUF)
3) C - Rask (CAR)
4) D - Martinez (LAK)
5) D - Faulk (CAR)
6) W - Boedker (ARI)
7) W - Zibanejad (OTT)
8) G - Raanta (NYR) |

That's an opinion I've heard quite a bit, here is my thought. I watched Greztz and Lemiuex, but not Orr. Gretz and Lemieux were unreal, no doubt. But the goaltending was atrocious, let's be honest. I think that the game has never been as skilled, big and fast as it is now. I know it's hard to say, but I honestly think those guys get half the amount of points in today's game. - neem55
The goaltending was good for the times, those guys just made it look worse than it was. Everything about today's games is better, they were just ahead of the curve. |

This team cannot be fixed through trades.
You demonstrated that perfectly with both the "Definitely Trade" and "Possibly Trade" lists. No depth, no assets (outside the ones we can't afford to move).
Draft, develop. Outside of Gaunce who we should keep, best we can hope for is picks and outcast projects. |

If we get first pick, I'm all for Matthews. You don't pass up on generational guys, even if they are from pheonix.
Edit: if we won the lotto though, I wouldn't mind sending Matthews to Nashville for Jones+ - neem55

Maybe, or maybe 10-20 guys getting 50 goal seasons was just a reflection of awful and less trained goaltending that relied on reflexes and athleticism much more. That's the position that has evolved the most, not to mention the size of the pads, the attention to detail for goalies in terms of position/watching tape ect. is just way beyond anything in the 80/early 90's IMO

Listen, if Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, Mark Messier, Mike Bossy and Ramond Bourque aren't generational talents, then guys like Stamkos aren't even in the same ballpark.
It's really a matter of systems play and attention to detail in terms of playing a 200 foot game. |
