I don't think he get's a say in the matter should the franchise relocate.
I'm not sure so players were too stoked to move from Atl to Winnipeg a few years ago either.

- dbot

Of course he gets no say in it....and players know it can happen, that its a business.
but when he's a cornerstone player and team success depends on him you do wanna keep him happy as much as possible.
But ya when a 300M franchise needs to move it just moves.

I dont think Mrs Luongo has much input if there is no franchise in florida.

I can't stand Bettman, but I think it is hard to argue that he has been bad at growing the game in the states and economically.

Like it or not he has been successful in expanding the game in California, Nashville, Tampa ( mixed results), Ottawa, Dallas, Minnesota (again), Denver, Carolina, Columbus and Winnipeg (again).

Florida, Phoenix and Atlanta failed or have struggled greatly but many people doubted some of the other moves that have turned out great.

I'm not sure how much he cares about the actual hockey but I think he has been very successful with the business side of it.

Carolina has the worst attendance in the league.

It also came from Hartford which was also failing.

on another note Its funny though how everyone blames bettman for it all. The BOGs vote and make the decisions, not bettman. BOG is above bettman, although bettman does advise them.

I like what has happened with the sport and its changes to a faster game. While I always was a fan of the rougher hockey the transition away from it has actually been a positive one.

Bettman has been commish so long, it is hard to tell what another commissioner could have done with the same opportunity.

The thing that is frustrating about Bettman is he doesn't come across as a fan of hockey, more like a sleazy lawyer.

He reminds me of a role that Kevin Spacey would play. I (frank)in hate Kevin Spacey the guy looks like a arrogant weasel.

Valid point. Perhaps more could have been done, or less. we will never know. But when comparing moves you gotta consider it'd be the same BOG. Doubt the commish himself would have much impact there.

you are right about the board of governors, likely the same, with a different commish.

So difficult to judge what could have been and really evaluating someones performance when there are few to compare him with in a similar and none in the same situation..

I look at the NBA and all the relocation they have seen. Would the league have been better off by moving some struggling teams or there weren't really any other viable options?

During his tenure, I'm not sure what agenda Bettman has pushed or influenced, lock outs and cba's... the struggles to get a good tv contract in the states. The league will survive him, it will be interesting to see what the next commish does.

well as much as I dislike bettman for just seeming like a weasel, when I stand back and look I think he has some positive impact. I dont always or even often like his answers but I think he has had (through his own abilities) positive outcomes in growing the sport and financial state. I do have my doubts someone else would have been as good in those regards.

all those years being frustrated with some moves, yet years later franchises are worth 10 times as much. with the leafs at an evaluation of 1B.

I do blame him for the lockouts however. He was an adviser to them and recommended locking out the players....what 3 times? 3 times the players were screwed. Thankfully we dont see 20M a year contracts likely due to it, but still.... it does appear the NHL came back stronger from it. I hate it, but it seems to be the case.

The entire Glendale thing was just retarded though. Beyond retarded actually

Not sure if the league is in the place it is in because of him or in spite of him?

My dad has this saying he repeats, I think I should be listening closer, but it is something to the effect of, Hockey has to be a great game to not to be screwed up by the people running it....

probably both...

I do think he is smart with finance. And getting better with it.

they added all those expansion teams years back taking a gamble they would flourish being in a new area with no hockey previously. Now they are very very careful where they go and the process is extremely tough, putting onus on the potential owner to show how / that it will survive. So at least they've learned and improved from it.
