To put it slightly in perspective...Byfuglien just signed for 5 years at 7.6 AAV. That is 600k more than Dion and they are the same age. Dion's salary is actually below his cap hit for the last 3 years of the deal.
I think one could argue that Byfugliens game will wear down even more than Phaneufs. - YuenglingJagr
Big Boooof is signed to 1 year less. And he's a much better skater than Phaneuf. He might fall off towards the end, but at this present moment, Buff is far and away better imo. He's shown no decline yet, unlike Phaneuf. Give me the legit game changing top pair guy at present, signed to 1 year less, over the guy right in the midst of his decline. It might be possible Buff's decline is more rapid and dramatic than Phaneuf's, but he's still in peak form at the moment. |

Not nice. He's turned himself into a terrific AHL #1.

When did Toronto go into rebuild mode? Today? Last summer when Kessel was traded? The Leafs stink and have since 2004. I personally believe Phaneuf can be a steady number 1on a decent team, with a decent partner. I think we'll see whether or not Dion Phaneuf can truly sink or swim on a team not so far removed from the playoffs. Seriously though, what crappy returns for Phaneuf and Kessel. - SuperSchennBros
its hard to trade fringe stars over the age of 26 with big contracts and restrictive no movement clauses and get great value, when everyone knows youre trying to move them |

I suppose "elite" can be debated from one season to another when you break things down to position or role but Phil Kessel was an elite winger probably prior to this season and his entire time in Toronto regardless of his team's success. The problem is, if Paul Holmgren can turn Jeff Carter into a 7th overall pick and Jake Voracek, how can Toronto not do the same? Kessel and Phaneuf not only should have got a better return each but also probably should have been sent out of the conference. |

well, for starters im not familiar enough with the absence of any NMC in carters deal. im guessing he didnt have one, judging by the fact that he would have probably blocked the deal rather than holing up in sea isle.
i dont think people realize how much the NMCs tie GMs hands. guys usually limit them to contenders, which asides from reducing leverage in general, is hard because those teams dont have typically have cap space |

No trade or no movement clauses have zip to do with what any team gets in return. If memory serves, Richards' clause kicked in on July 1st prior to being dealt. Holmgren made a fantastic deal. ESPN is reporting the move was made to create space for Steven Stamkos. This only alludes to my post of trading minor league players we don't talk about or care about to get JvR back. Toronto is a stupid organization and Stamkos would be committing career suicide by going there. |

Addition thru subtraction... those were a couple of toxic contracts (and personalities).

That's just outside speculation, isn't it? A lazy game of connect the dots between home town boy and home town team.
Maybe they go the Hextall route of shedding salary and staying patient? |

So it's fair to judge a player's play even if the team is awful from top to bottom? I'm sorry but Ottawa is ten times the team Toronto is and I'll judge the player after he's out of such a poisonous situation. They made him Captain day one. Based on what experiences?
