Yeah. Looks like the Leafs just wanted to dump him. All players they got back are FA after next season. They get a C level prospect and a 2nd as well. - PhillySportsGuy
You could say the exact same thing about his trade from Calgary.

#Sens get Phaneuf, Frattin, Bailey, Rupert and Donaghey in exchange for Cowen, Greening, Michalek, Lindberg and 2nd-rounder in 2017. - MBFlyerfan
WOW. I didn't think trades like this happened anymore.
I think they wanted to clear his salary, so they can start the upswing for 2017-18. They'll have a ton of money and a ton of young talent - PhillySportsGuy
Yep.
It's not like Toronto is going to be any good anytime soon, so this deal makes a ton of sense for them.

Todd Cordell is saying Lindberg isn't a bad prospect. I like the deal from the Leafs perspective. Ottawa paying a poopload to two guys in Ryan and Phaneuf who likely won't age well. Not a great idea for a team that doesn't like to spend up to the cap ceiling.
Michalek is making 4 mil for the next 2 years
Greening is a 1.5ish mil buried contract
Cowen is like 3 mil
They're not exactly dumping contracts here - Giroux_Is_God
They are taking on minimal salary commitments in order to get rid of a long term commitment. It is money going the other way so Ottawa can afford Dion. Greening has been buried...Cowen has not lived up to expectations and Michalek has been injured. They will also be offloading contracts at the TDL
I really wanted Cowen and Greening for AMac, but it is what it is.
I'm going tonight too and my record is ugly... it's 0-2-3 with the game I gave to a friend being another SO loss. But I'll still be there tonight thinking they've got to win soon when I'm there this season. - dragonoffrost
Good luck tonight, I'm going Thursday. The teams record isn't what I hoped it would be but at least they are entertaining.
PS going to a Saturday game against the pens in April, would like to meet up with some buzzers then.
To OTT: D. Phaneuf, M. Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert, Cody Donaghey.
To TOR: J. Cowen, C. Greening, M Michlaek, Tobias Lindberg, '17 2d - opeth_pa
The quality of JR's absolute (frank)ing snipe often gets forgotten in lieu of Kapanen. Rightfully so...but all I'm saying is that shot was just (frank)ing sweet

Still more than enough to make it work for Stamkos. Remember they have a bunch of young talent on ELCs that may be ready to play in the NHL next year. - PhillySportsGuy
Man, can't believe TO was able to shed that contract and not take anything worse than Cowen back.
"Here, I'll take some of your garbage if you take this overpriced DVD player that I overpaid for and has 6 more years of payments to go. It still works, but you have to assume the payments and it's not as good as a Blue Ray player."

True...but they have to pay Kadri and Reilly I believe. That'll probably add up to what Dion makes.
I'm not doubting the financial advantages here with getting that albatross out of the way...all I'm saying is I'm not too sure this move by itself gives them the means to go after Stamkos

Not to mention that albatross contract Karlsson has.

They'll likely let Grabner, Matthias, Spaling, and Parenteau go after this year. that's $9M right there. Nylander and Kapenen will turn NA pro next year and they'll buy out Lupul if they have to.
