True...but they have to pay Kadri and Reilly I believe. That'll probably add up to what Dion makes.
I'm not doubting the financial advantages here with getting that albatross out of the way...all I'm saying is I'm not too sure this move by itself gives them the means to go after Stamkos - Giroux_Is_God
They were going to have to pay them anyway. They have enough coming off to sign Stamkos easily

The Manning/Medvedev shell game continues tonight. - PLindbergh31
I have no problem with Manning being in but I would have him in for Gudas. Gudas has been a turnover machine lately. I guess with Anaheims big forwards they want Gudas in (not that Medvedev is small) but still, if it were me Gudas would take a seat for a game or two.

wow....
To OTT: D. Phaneuf, M. Frattin, Casey Bailey, Ryan Rupert, Cody Donaghey.
To TOR: J. Cowen, C. Greening, M Michlaek, Tobias Lindberg, '17 2d - opeth_pa
This looks like poop for Toronto.
JvR for 5 Phantom players we never talk about and Robert Hagg being the center piece.

Man, can't believe TO was able to shed that contract and not take anything worse than Cowen back. - Tomahawk
Turned Phaneuf into 1.5 years of dead space, a 2nd and an ok prospect
Turned Kessel into 7 years of $1M, Kapanen and a 1st
Turned Clarkson into Horton LTIR for 6 years

If they want Stamkos, they can do things to move money around. JVR can be moved for an asset and Lupul can probably be dumped if they attach an asset to him.
I'll be honest though, I think Stamkos re-signs in Tampa. How often do teams lose players like that? #1 centers and #1 D in their primes rarely ever change teams due to financial reasons.

so when all is said and done Ottawa got Phaneuf at a 7 mil cap for 4 more years after this year and expiring contract in Frattin (UFA) and 3 entry level contracts and Ottawa got 3 guys who total 9.75 million whose contracts expire after next year, a prospect in Lindberg and a 2nd rounder. no short term cap relief but a lot of relief after next season

So TO's gotten rid of Kessel, Phaneuf and Clarkson.... I guess GM's can always count on other GM's to be (frank)ing stupid.

Kessel and Phaneuf are both still good players though. I feel like everyone is praising him simply because he was realistic about their true value. The Clarkson move was a creative one.

I think one of the guys the Leafs got expires this year and something is strange about Cowen's deal being team friendly.
