I'm hoping it's water under the bridge after the 2012 Winter Classic. |

Why does he deserve better? Because he is so effective?
He hasnt had a good season since 2013-14. He is supposed to provide some supplemental offense, but thats not happening either. Maybe a game or two off will help.
We sorely lack offensive punch outside of the top 6, and Read isnt helping any. - jak521
Read provides more supplemental offense than anyone else in the bottom 6.

Except Laughton. But unfortunately Laughton has been getting killed in the possession game all season, despite being heavily sheltered.

What treatment?
Read said he played best on RW. Same as Simmonds and Schenn.
Simmonds playing well on top line and Schenn playing well with Couturier until injury.
For a while the top 2 lines were playing well together.
Voracek - Giroux - Simmonds
Raffl - Couturier - Schenn
Not sure where he was going to go based on his preference and how things were.
Also I think Read's role is that of a 3rd line winger. Kind of like Raffl. Guys nice to have but not guys I think you want in your top 6 where you rely on them to produce continually. - J35Bacher
For most of the season Matt Read has been a 4th line, second unit PP net presence, while being used on the PK regularly. Now he's being scratched a second time this season while neing 10 times the player he was last year. Matt Read is more then this. A responsible top 6, two way player with skill. He's not gonna carry Laughton and Umberger or anyone else. |

Yeah.
Howe's the only non-Bullies guy to have his number retired, and that's because he was Mark (frank)ing Howe. |

Still don't know how Propp and Kerr are in the HOF while Recchi isn't. I'm not taking anything away from those 2, but Recchi has the team record for points in a season and spent parts of 10 season with the team. As for Dave Schultz.... |

Hextall definitely. I mean the guy scored a goal for cryin' out loud.
I just always liked LeClair and he definitely impressed me with his speech. The Legion of Doom was a force and will be remembered in Flyers history. I think he and Lindros were such a dynamic duo that he deserves it. - funmaster18
You cant retire LeClair's 10 if you dont retire Kerr's 12 |

I'd say it was never going to happen until they buried the hatchet a couple years ago with the winter classic and then subsequently inducting him into the Flyers Hall of Fame. It paved the way for this possibility. |

He was scratched before this season and responded well to it and came back scoring 1 or 2 goals next game. Or had a multi point game. Maybe that's what Haks trying to do (again) |

I have a question.
I think it's a given Eric Lindros' number will be retired one day in Philly. I believe we all debated whether or not Hextall will be years before becoming an Assistant General Manager in Philly but this is a pretty big gray area and we've seen many 27's since him. What about John LeClair and Claude Giroux? Do you think these numbers will someday be retired? Another gray area, Mark Recchi.
Thoughts. - SuperSchennBros
The Flyers will more or less only retire numbers of players in the Hockey Hall of Fame (the "big" Hall in Toronto, not just team HOF and/or U.S. Hockey HOF). Barry Ashbee was a special case.

Never said that.
I just dont think it is that much of a big deal. We arent making the playoffs. We have lost 3 in a row and the 3rd loss was the worst. Maybe Read is a bit banged up. Maybe they wanna give him and Laughton a night in the press box to soak things up.. Maybe the chose to do it tonight because its against another non-playoff team, and we have a back to back this weekend.
I dont think Umberger is a capable NHLer anymore, but Read and Laughton getting scratched for a game isnt the end of the world. |

Let's just retire every number for a player that was halfway decent, make it real difficult for current guys to pick numbers |

He had 3 20-goal seasons (pro-rated 12/13 for 79 games), 2 of them after Jagr was gone. Also, he and Jagr were never linemates. His production has gone down, but he put up 30 points last year and is on pace for another mid-high 20 points this year. Please tell me how that is "glorified 4th liner." |

I wouldn't say he is a top 6.
I believe Read and Raffl are about the same. Guys that can fill in the top 6 if needed but good 3rd line players. Play a good two way game, kill penalties. Can play some PP minutes.
So he sits a game or two. |

That may be true, but he'd help the bottom 6 with that (and on the PK) a lot more than Umberger would. He's the best option we have. |
