I have a very neutral stance on Schultz. I hated him two pre-seasons ago. Thought he was toast.. but he played very well last season. This year he has had some struggles, but he still plays a pretty sound game, and can skate better than I thought. He has a terrible shot (even he was surprised by that cannon a couple of games ago) but can move the puck a little bit. Terrible at trying to handle the puck. A guy doesnt make it to 1000 games for nothing though. - jak521
What you have to hope for imo is that provorov can come in and start doing the things that can make a schultz expendable, rather than a streit or a medvedev.
From what From the little I've seen of provorov, he is relentless at taking bodies and sticks from the front of the net away, which is pretty damn exciting considering the other strengths he has |

You want to retire Hextall's number? He wasn't even necessarily the best #27 in team history. - jmatchett383
Hextall is borderline. He is the second best (eligible) goalie in team history. I added eligible for the case that can not happen but has been quietly done anyway. If Hexy sneaks into Toronto as a GM you can finish the case for his number retired. Doubt he makes it as a player though.
I like that most of the numbers retired are in Toronto in the Hall. |

Statistically, Hextall may NOT be the 2nd best goalie in team history.
He certainly is the 2nd most decorated goalie in team history, with respect to awards and such. |

I have a question.
I think it's a given Eric Lindros' number will be retired one day in Philly. I believe we all debated whether or not Hextall will be years before becoming an Assistant General Manager in Philly but this is a pretty big gray area and we've seen many 27's since him. What about John LeClair and Claude Giroux? Do you think these numbers will someday be retired? Another gray area, Mark Recchi.
Thoughts. - SuperSchennBros
I believe the only jerseys that should be retired are for hall of famers personally. |

Out of curiosity, why? Surely someone can make an incredible contribution to a team without being recognized by the league's history books? |

Actually Hextall has a better save and gaa then Pelle. Which shocked me as I just looked at it so really he is probably the second best. Boucher has better numbers but not the longevity Hextall had. |

There's a team hall of fame for that. Jersey retirings are for team legends, Mt. Rushmore type players. |

The start to the article in the Philly paper makes you say 'huh'?
"The Flyers will try to improve their attack Thursday night by adding struggling R.J. Umberger and unproven rookie Jordan Weal to their lineup against visiting Buffalo.
The two forwards have not scored a goal this season."

Toronto to me is the final rubber stamp to have your jersey retired. If you aren't there you need to have a huge reason for that to be waved (see Ashbee). |

the Flyers Hall of Fame is for those players. to be only the best of the best should have their jerseys in the rafters. outside of Ashbee, the Flyers have stayed true to that as well. Howe's number wasn't retired til he finally got into the HHOF |

I actually kind of like the silent jersey retirements...where players just know not to take certain numbers |

Umberger in over Laughton.
Way to develop those kids coach.
Varsity at it again. - flyer_nutter
Either send Laughton to Lehigh Valley, or let him play. Asinine to make him a healthy scratch so a corpse can play. |

I read the first part, and I had an image in my head of the team secretly retiring a number and telling no one. Illuminati jersey retirings. When a new player asks for the secretly retired number, they disappear. |

How about instead of scratching Read multiple times, maybe, just once, scratch one of the 4th liners...? Every single line on the team has been rearranged so many times, many players coming in and out of the lineup, but they're just locked in stone every night. Only on this team can the 4th line be the 3rd line and are married to one another (polygamously) till death do them part. I get it: they're "reliable." Fact remains they're a group of average 4th liners, with a tweener or two thrown in.
To be fair, I can understand Laughts sitting a game or two. But Read? I see nothing from him BUT effort and solid two way play. And Hakstol cited effort as the scratch reasoning. |
