Absolutely.....
If i was a TB fan i wouldn't want management to trade him...TB has a shot at a long playoff run again this year and even if it means he walks i would take him for that run even if it meant losing him for nothing...
I get the asset management thing but a playoff run very imp as well... - Fruitcakenipple
Captain and face of franchise with potentially no indication he has a desire to leave.

You'd keep him for playoffs, even though that's where he chokes? |

So Mr contract expert what should they have done prior to July 1st when the nmc kicked in? - Feds91Stammer
With a high priced asset, you make your highest and best offer long before July 1st. If he refuses to sign that you know exactly where you stand.
If I were Yzerman, I would have had discussions with possible trade partners the minute the season ended. |

Yep... It's ridiculous to say they should have traded him last summer..No GM in this league would have done that... |

I didnt check his stats, I thought he was worse. I like the guy, but he is a goner because he wants to be close to home.
But he is being selfish because he knows he aint staying so he could have told the Bolts to move him so they can get a great return. But he'd rather not be hated in Tampa once he leaves so he's playing a game and that is what I dont like.
Listen to him talk, he never EVER said he wants to stay with Tampa to win a cup, he says he wants to win a cup with "this team". 2 very different meanings if the Bolts dont win this year and he hasnt signed with them.
He's talking like a captain and a pro which is fine, but if you cared about Tampa, I would think he would care about the return he can fetch them. |

See... I don't know the exact dates on when you are officially allowed to extend a deal, but you certainly can get a verbal agreement. If Stamkos is unwilling to even do that, then again, you know exactly where you stand.

Stamkos is holding all the cards in this. Everyone needs to put him being traded out of their heads, because it ain't going to happen. He either re-signs a long term extension in Tampa Bay, or he goes the free-agency and signs for the highest bidder. |

So let me guess... You think agents and teams don't negotiate prior to July 1st. You need to gtfo.
Most deals are done verbally before pen ever hits paper. Verbal agreements are usually not enforceable, certainly in this case it wouldn't be, but you sure as hell know where you stand when someone refuses the basic framework of a deal.

It kicked in this year. Yzerman Was the gm. Stamkos probably had it in because he has no intentions of becoming a ufa rental. - Feds91Stammer
NMC likely Meehan's idea. NMC are cheap to add to a contract but sure tie a GM's hands. NMC are generally being replaced by limited trade lists of 10 to 12 teams.
I believe after last June, all Stamkos wanted to do was win the SC with Tampa. I expect Meehan was looking after his client's best interests so negotiations were slow last summer and they were interested in getting the best deal for Stamkos (and Meehan's cut). I also think Yzerman is worried about all the other signings he has to do and trying to keep to the cap. Stamko's playoffs also didn't knock Yzerman's socks off.
I expect Stamkos to resign in Tampa and I remember Arty will owe me a beer when it happens. |

Players that can't make the Nhl team and cry about it by going on strike are usually traded for top dollar |
