Probably none. Though Mason has been horrendous in terms of PK save %, so he might be worse than Rinne there -- not sure. Flyers goalies' dominance has been more at evens. Which again...why the vast discrepancy? Lappy is a great guy and a heart and soul player, and maybe they can shuffle him around the organ-I-zation. But I have issues with his coaching strategies. - Mononoke
Fair enough, I'd just like to see what they'd look like on the PK with better Dmen.

I got a question: should Hexy look to sign MDZ early? He's coming off an injury plagued year where his scoring was down (frankly, due to team wide issues and poor luck). But his play has been phenomenal. I wonder if waiting too long would cause his value to rise. If you identify him as a piece of the puzzle, then maybe try to scoop in when he's cheaper. Just a thought. - Mononoke
it is something ive thought of as well and I am very on the fence
I am suspecting that he will finally want some security and a long term deal. this will lead to a lower AAV but a longer commitment.
is this offseason too early to tell if he will be worth the long term deal and also if they Flyers need a veteran defenseman signed long term?
I personally dont think so, it wont hurt to sign him to a 5 year extension or something like that. Just one of those things that they have the leverage on unfortunately. They dont really have any specific reason to give the Flyers an early discount |

I think most of the struggles come from the easy passing lanes. It is hard for someone like me to tell if thats personnel or coaching, but with the amount of hockey ive watched, it just looks like the flyers are letting passes through all four defenders much more than others which makes it harder on the goalie |

It's hard to believe MDZ is still only 25. He can be a key piece of the top 4 for when we contend. Picure him paired with Ghost or Sanheim in a year or two. Whatever he was doesn't matter. He's become a 2 way rock, and Hakstol and the fans are in agreement. I definitely see him being resigned no matter what, but my main point was taking advantage of an unlucky points season to lower his cost. Because I could easily see him playing this well again and putting up 30 next year. 2 years ago his career was on the outs; he would leap at some job security and seems to love his teammates and management.
What would you pay him though? |

If I was Hextall I would absolutely keep him around long term. He would actually be worth an AMac like contract. I agree that he will be an important part of the top 4 and the prospects will have to come in and replace him...not get a spot handed to him. That and him taking on more leadership. I would be very happy with 6/30
I understand what you were asking, I just have my doubts that it will be possible. Agents arent stupid and recognize the situation. He may be down on points but his ice time is very high and they wont sign early for a discount unless they feel like they are getting a good deal. Hextall may want to get it done, but it doesnt mean it happens. The leverage shifts to the player the later he remains unsigned. |

I would definitely see what kind of number they throw out first.
Kind of amazing how the Flyers got MDZ and Mason for almost nothing and they both became a top pairing dman and starting goalie immediately. |

Well, to be fair, only one of them came back from a broken clavicle (caused by the team the other guy plays for) only to pick up right where he left off. - Scoob

NHL named McDavid the rookie of the month over Ghost.
- hereticpride
McDavid had 14 GP and piled up 5G and 12A (17Pts)
Gostisbehere had 15 GP and piled up 4G and 9A (13Pts)
I think it had to of been a toss up between Gostisbehere and McDavid and they went with the latter given his production after being out so long with an injury.

If they asked for a 5 AAV for 5-6 years I think that's doable. Hextall is very fair with contracts so we shall see. I wasn't talking a gross underpayment, but more like see if he can sign him for .25-.5 less or something.
Add in the fact that they just got essentially a free first round pick in Philippe Myers. Hextall definitely spends his weekends coupon clipping and yard sale hunting. |

And they have seriously underachieved. With Fluery, aside when he's scoring on himself, they should have won a second and maybe a third cup with that roster. - Tomfan365
No matter the roster, it takes some good fortune to win the Cup. |
