Down 3–2 in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals against the rival New Jersey Devils, Messier confronted the New York media and publicly guaranteed a Game 6 victory. With fans and players on both sides reading the news headline, it then became a feat comparable to Babe Ruth's called shot and Joe Namath's Super Bowl III guarantee, and he backed it up by scoring a natural hat trick in the third period on an empty net goal with ESPN commentator Gary Thorne boasting, "Do you believe it?! Do you believe it?! He said we will win game six and he has just picked up the hat trick!" It helped the Rangers erase a two-goal deficit. The Rangers went on to win the series in a thrilling seventh game double overtime nail biter.

That was pretty (frank)ing impressive.

I cannot deny him that but where was that bravado when he played here?
He was a flop here & kept his mouth shut without a cast to back him up.
Like i said he was arrogant but a failure here on his resume still remains.

Messier without a great team behind him was just another great player except here.
Always thought he was an arrogant idiot or if wrong why is he not a GM or coach anywhere? He was a waste of money here with his overrated hype of greatness.
Him having a hand in trading TL along with Keenan did get us Bertuzzi & the Sedins eventually. Thats all he contributed here.
It was Leetch & Richter who beat us in '94 not Messier.

Now on to all these ppl claiming to be in the locker room & knowing all...
Spare us with your tabloid material & leave it for the Pratts etc.
Opinions r one thing & guessing a whole other matter.

I'm not guessing, if you read stories on Toews, you will see players make comments. Morrow had one where he was saying his preparation and passion are what make people love him. Iggy had an interview talking about how nothing they did to himm in the playoffs seem to phase him and he was a leader on team Canada. That's not my opinion or a guess, but me referring to opinions of IMO other great captains in their own right. I mentioned specific players in my comments for a reason, those specific players have said things about Toews in the dressing room or on the ice

Exactly. I hated what he and Keenan did to Trevor, but he was always really cool when he came in for events at Bauer. Him and his sister seemed like pretty good people.

So you begrudge the guy for taking a contract offered to him?

His legacy is only poor in Vancouver. I'm pretty sure the rest of the hockey world thinks pretty highly of him.

I liked the insight of Sportsnet Project 9 for Canucks next year. Patrick Laine would fill a huge hole. They also think a top 6 UFA. I don't want Eriksson though.

Me too. I agree letting bo/the kids fill the third line and bringing in a UFA would be ideal. maybe one of the fins and viola!

I don't have his number.
But Gretzky, leetch, Coffey and a long list of others seem to think so. I hated him in Vancouver, should've never been a Canuck adn Keenan the same. That doesn't mean the guy wasn't a great leader who won multiple cups with multiple franchises as captain (something only he has done). If you look up greatest leader's in NHL history, he'll be there.

- neem55

He will be. And the big one for me was the cup in EDM without Gretzky…everyone said it could not be done in EDM without Wayne there. 6 cups for Messier even though the 94 one was a bit controversial with Garys refs but still…hardly a fluke those 5 in EDM.

What was even more impressive in some regard was that all those Oilers who left Edmonton went on to win cups except Gretzky. maybe it was those guys that carried Wayne all those years in EDM…

Just sayin'

Ony the Canucks matter to me. As for the hockey world thats another story.
Messier accomplished what he did but still was a failure here.

I think Eriksson a good player but I agree.
Brouwer, okposo, Boedker, Backes,....lots of UFA's that I would prefer over him

I wasn't a fan when messier was here but I hate him for the player he was against us rather than for us.

Taking 11 was poopty, but I never watched Maki play and wasn't as connected.

I don't care what he accomplished, always will be a POS in my eyes same as others like Keith.

Boedker not worth what he wants for a contract IMO
Let him cash in somewhere else.
If its scoring we want its Eriksson for a winger but i don't see that happening.
Brouwer Okposo Backes all at only the right price & term.
Backes helps our depth at C & allows JM to hone his game in Utica.
Much would depend on where Sutter plays & that creates a logjam on the wings.
