Nice article Jillian, I'm intrigued to see what else you have for us in the future. It's always nice to read a fresh perspective on the game!

It is fun when MLB/NFL teams troll other teams social media, like when the steelers and bills had their end of the year "thanks buffalo" tweets for helping Pittsburgh make the postseason. Fans love the insight to teams, plus it makes me feel IMO closer to the teams you watch

I really hope it never gets to the point where the NHL, or a team can dictate what someone says on their personal twitter account. That being said, all it takes is a few bad situations for a zero tolerance policy to be put in place.

If I were an athlete, I would probably have one official twitter account that would be all business, and then a personal account where I could be myself. Fan interactions are great, but one wrong word can be costly and in the sue happy world we live in, you can never be too careful.

Ask Dennis Wideman or Evander Kane the impact of social media on how the game is played and the how players are perceived...

the league will put the kybosh on fan interaction on social media the second one of the player's "offends" someone and it makes the news.. whether it's the fan or the player doing or saying something stupid, if i've learned anything in my life it's you can't stop stupidity you can only hope to contain it.. that's exactly what the league will do

Welcome aboard Jillian.

It is very interesting to see what will happen with the influence of fans on the game. As you mentioned the 'John Scott situation' was the first time fans really had a say in a matter regarding the NHL. Without the pressure from the fans Scott probably wasn't allowed to play in the All Star game.

For me this situation is more or less comparable with a political situation which occurred last week in my own country. This is going to be a long story, sorry for that: In the Netherlands we have this rule that when you get 300,000 signatures for a referendum the government have to obey and hold the referendum.
A right winged satiric website 'GeenStijl' was able to get over the 300k limit in signatures with a campaign built from their website and social media. The referendum was about an agreement with Ukraine (which would put our relationship with Russia more under pressure, bla bla).
The referendum was held and most people (a lot of people which were disinterested didn't show up) voted NO against the agreement, which is a disaster for the role of the Netherlands within the European union.

After that a lot of politicians and high placed people were very critical of the referendum. Paraphrasing a newspaper: 'Aristotle and Polybius mentioned that democracy could turn into some negative (called ochlocracy): the normal people (the mass) start to take over based on their numerical advantage. This means that the mass will be susceptible for strong opinions by certain politicians who will use the mass for their own benefit.' This was the case for the dutch referendum, a lot of people didn't even know what they really voted against.

The ochlocracy example may be a bit dramatic but the case of Scott shows how a practical joke (like the GeenStijl referendum) can have huge impact. The dutch government will take measures for sure to make sure this doesn't happen again. What will the NHL do if fans (on the success of the Scott campaign) start demanding more say? Social media is a strong thing and with petitioning a lot can be reached. I won't be surprised to see an action coming soon where fans try to implement a rule change (goalie attributes, larger nets and so on). I'm already really looking forward to an action like that and how the NHL will respond

ps. sorry for grammar mistakes etc.

Actually, yes. There are other places that have excellent opinion articles by quality female writers on various aspects to the game, and whether the article is written by somebody who looks like a model or somebody who looks like MiB it really doesn't detract from the article itself. In most cases, there is just a name (or sometimes pseudonym) and not an actual picture.

I also have no idea what "throw momma from the train" is and am afraid to google it at work
