Skeptical tinkering on the fringes will help the slide for Blackhawks. I believe changes are needed at the top first and foremost. Even with him they will be fielding worse roster year after year due to contracts they gave. And I give 50% chance Q will mess him up. |

@TiMMYS222 @TheAthleticChi He's definitely a top-6 defenseman, maybe even take some pressure off TvR in top 4 especially with being a lefty.

Am I wrong, or does Kempny sound a little like the skills of Trevor Daley? |

Sounds like a good pick up to me ,I wonder how the doom and gloom crowd will frame this move . Oh well on to the next mistake I guess .. |

Daley would never have been called a 2 way defender. I think Kempny is more of D 1st defender that has started to show his O in the last year. A better fit in Q's system probably. [/img] |

Dreger: I know Marc Bergevin and Ron Francis 'were in there pretty much to the start of the worlds' on Kempny. #Habs #Canes #Blackhawks
Dreger: "Chicago was choice No. 1 for Kempny." Was told that was case, as reported, prior to start of worlds. #Blackhawks |

Is that because of his age being 25? |

Assuming the defense has been "sorted out" onto forwards... Would be nice if Ladd came back. Shaw is versatile and it seems if they want to keep him, subtract Bickell, and another salary. Damn salary cap... |

NHL CBA - Section 9.1.C
Notwithstanding the chart set forth in (b) above, a Player who at the time he was
drafted was playing for a team outside North America or who meets the qualifications set forth in Article 8.4(a)(v) ( a "European Player") who signs his first SPC at ages 25-27 shall be subject to the Entry Level System for one (1) year. A European Player who signs his first SPC at age 28 or older is not subject to the Entry Level System under any circumstances.

I really wonder (assuming it happens)How EXP is going to effect Free agents. No one is getting a NMC, So will players take 1 year deals so they are not forced on a expansion team? also teams that have a extra spot (IE don't have a 7th skater they really need to keep I'm sure could get a player for cheap that the team that has to many guys to protect. Hossa, kane, Teows, Panik, Kruger, Shaw (unless he is traded or on a 1 year deal) We have a opening for a player that is Not on ELC Maybe 2.
There are going to be a ton of D man available via EXP. It would have been nice to be able to expose Seabs. No EXP team would take him I don't think. Is it possible he could wave to Expansion? I would think a team would not take him because if they did the NMC would kick back in and his contract is front loaded which would be tough on the club $$.

Too bad he can't wear #3 - because then he would be Three's Kempny.
Sorry, is it too early for crappy jokes? |

From a big picture perspective, it looks like the FO is trying to put together a team that will largely be unexposed to the expansion draft.
They obviously have a core of players with NMCs that must be protected, which basically eats up the 75% limit of retained salary.
Secondly, they have a growing crop of players with ELCs that will also be exempt because they will have less than two complete years of NHL service and will be RFAs - namely Panarin, Mott, Kempny, Svedberg, and Gus.
That all said, I still see them shying from making any new deals for forwards until the cap number is announced, and decisions on expansion being one team or two, if two will the draft happen in the same year for both teams, and if it will happen at the end of next season or the year after.
It is likely to be a very boring next few weeks. |

JJ,
Have you heard anything concerning other potential Russian players? I've read a few things about Evgeny Dadanov and Vadim Shipachev, both of whom played with Panarin in SKA Saint Petersburg as I understand it. Both seem to have put up decent numbers in the KHL. Any chance the Hawks are interested? |
