You stated " I'd take him to arbitration in a heartbeat". That's a the wrong mindset and a poor approach to have in a contract negotiation. The Flyers should do every thing they can, within reason, to avoid that situation.
Know what else is an option under the CBA? To hold him to his Q offer, and let him stew! Should they use that, because it's an available option, and should be used? - MJL
"Wrong mindset" and "poor approach" are nothing more than your feelings.
What are you going to say if the Flyers take him to arbitration?
Seriously. What are you going to say?

The biggest stumbling block for the Jackets is there's no way they can retain salary in a trade. They just can't keep the money on the books.
Maybe they'll have to pony up and just do it to get out from under. I can't see them paying Hartnell a million for the next three years. That's why they did the Horton deal with Toronto. They didn't want dead money on the books. - mayorofangrytown
Jordan Weal for Hartnell with the NMC gone and $750K retained.
Saves them several million dollars and a protection slot. |

Phish are playing in Philly tonight, anyone going?
I went last Saturday at wrigley, best show I've ever seen from them, or anyone else. |

No, because you can lose the case -- what if Schenn asked for $6 million? You can't pay that. If he doesn't come down, you absolutely can and should go to arbitration - AllInForFlyers
Flyers have the leverage here, as he is an RFA. They can stick to their guns if Schenn won't come down. Schenn's only choice at that point would be to elect arbitration, or hold out. Again, I'll ask, how often do players actually go to arbitration? I think a fair deal will get done. Flyers should only elect arbitration as a last resort. |

You'd think a Hartnell trade would be a no brainer for most teams if you're getting him for 3 yrs at 3-3.5 mil. That's not so hard to swallow. I'd take him back. Love his attitude. This team could use some of that personality back while we transition the kids into the lineup. |

What the Flyers have to watch here is the future.
Lets say Schenn wants 5-5.25 million long term. Thats a commitment I am not willing to make to a player who has had one true breakout season. While getting a lot of PP time and spending a good chunk of his minutes as a complimentary player to Giroux.
Schenn isn't running his line on his own. I am not making that kind of commitment long term after one season.
The other angle is lets say Schenn wants 5-5.25 million for 3 years. Let's say he repeats the kind of year he has this last season. What does he want on his next deal, 6.5 million?
I've grown to like Schenn, but the Flyers cant bend over here. |

CHL Import Draft didn't go great for Rubtsov. Definitely harder to imagine him coming to the CHL now. |

Huh?
Arbitration is handing the matter off to an impartial 3rd-party to force a compromise. Teams end up paying more than they wanted just as often as players get less than they were looking for. - Tomahawk
i understand what arbitration is. a team deciding to go down the route of arbitration is what im referring to as hardball
EDIT: in this situation with Schenn, there is no way an arbitrator looks at Schenns body of work and awards him anything close to 5.5-6 million. in this exact, specific case, the flyers choosing arbitration is them playing with hardball with schenn |

Phish and Dave Matthews Band are two bands I just don't get. I mean, they write fair music if your goal is to lay back and be stoned. But that's about it, there's nothing really special about them. They make Jimmy Buffet look like the (frank)ing Beatles. |

No, based on comments that GM's make about how they handle negotiations, that's the general mindset and approach of teams. They want to negotiate fair and amicable deals with players, not rake them over the coals.
I'm not going to say anything, if the Flyers take him to arbitration. Why would I need to? Refer back to what I said. Have I said that the Flyers won't take him to arbitration? Or have I said it's a last resort and should be avoided?
This is no different than what am I going to say if the Red Wings give up a first round pick to get rid of the Datsyuk contract! |

Keep in mind I know Couturier and Schenn are not very compatible as players, but did Coots have his break out year when he signed the extension? |

And again, I'll state that it is completely irrelevant how many people do and don't go to arbitration. Schenn might, might not. What someone else did or didn't do is completely irrelevant |

I don't want him back.
Also think if Hartnell was still here would Schenn get the chances he did? This is a rebuilding team.
I want guys that are here to get those chances to develop or grow. |

The way that Pittsburgh brought in Bill Guerin and Mark Cullen as parts of their young nuclei?
I'd have no problem with Hartnell as $3.5M for 3 years. You can't have all young guys on the team, you need some veterans (yes, I know we have some). I think he had a great attitude here, and added some swagger as well. I'd like to see the guys see that first hand. |

wouldnt it be different if he was guaranteed to play in the CHL? whereas its sorta up in the air now, almost leaning towards not playing in the CHL this year. |

They did give up their first-round pick. Just because they got one back is absolutely irrelevant -- it could just as easily be argued Arizona sent the first back so they didn't have to pay Joe Vitale real dollars vs. Datsyuk's phantom hit
