Yes the bonuses are limited but they can be worded to make them easier to to achieve.
- A_SteamingLombardi

Agreed. It's just very concerning when highly regarded insiders such as Simmons and Berger are reporting on a "toxic" relationship already.

If Lou (and Mike) do convince Matthews to do a 180 and stay with the Leafs, they've earned every penny of their contract, in my book

Yes, Brisson is consistently linked to Matthews on Twitter.

Check out his Wikipedia page. He reps Kane, Crosby, Toews, Kopitar. Lots of the big boys.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Brisson

According to the page, he was also the agent who brokered Roberto Luongo's trade from the Canucks to the Panthers...

- Carol Schram

Maybe Brisson is brokering a trade to move Matthews out of Toronto.

Don't think the Leafs have the cap room this year for that

I suspect he's probably just negotiating. Maybe a bit frustrated by the pace of the talks. Even Berger said in the comments below that original tweet that he thinks the deal will get done.

Still, fun to speculate...

Wouldn't you think if he was desperate to not sign with the leafs and go elsewhere it would be Arizona?

I think there is a bit of leeway with Type A bonuses but the rest are league mandated I believe.

For example you can only give value for games played in 3 tiers, 5 games, 10 games and 10+ games. Games played bonuses cannot be applied above the max salary of 925 K and there is a ceiling placed on them which I believe is 25K.

So they are worthless to offer to a player that would already be receiving the full salary.

Type A bonuses are able to be given out for specific things like goals, icetime, +/-, points and have a cap per category(215K), so you couldn't offer 100K for 5goals and 200K for 6 goals and 300K for 7 goals etc.

Type A bonuses can only add up to an additional 850K.

Type B bonuses are where rookies can make much more money, up to 2m extra but the player would need finish top 5 in award voting or other situations when the player would need to be outperforming other rookies. Not something a team can negotiate. They can't say, we will pay you 2m in bonuses Austin if you score more goals than Mason Raymond this year or whatever.

I had to stop myself, not sure how highly regarded those media guys were... I realized I wasn't concerned as I have all the faith in the world in the Leafs management group...

As was evident by the survey 200 Leafs fans recently took for the Hockey News, they have more faith in 12 other management teams than their own.
