Yikes...you think they would protect Colborne and Pickard over Varly and Grigorenko or Soderberg.
Crazy take |

Canes have to expose Murphy under the 40/70 rule as long as he gets to 35 games this year. That is why he got a 2 year deal, & Wisniewski was bought out. All to protect Faulk!!!
The Canes D roster only has Faulk and Murphy who would reach this requirement, and is under contract for next year.
Since it is only 8 skaters and not (4 F, 4 D) Canes will protect: Staal, Skinner, Rask, Faulk, Lindholm, Nestrasil, Teravainen, & either Giuseppe or Nordstrom(whichever one has the better year). Ward or Lack is a toss up. Canes will expose the one that has the crappy year...like I said it's a toss up. |

@Coga: How many years of doing nothing does Grigs have to go through before people stop talking about untapped potential and start talking about bust? Kid's 22. He should be entering his prime right now and has only showed modest development. Right now, he's a young bottom six player with some upside left, but he's never going to become the player he was projected to be.
Anyways, C-bus is in a bad spot. I wouldn't want to lose either Cam or Boone. I think Atkinson is incredibly underrated, but you know what? He's 27 and Jenner is 23. This isn't a question about upside vs. sure thing. Jenner is already a good hockey player with ample room to grow still. Atkinson at 27 has hit his peak. Also, C-bus won't be contending any time soon, so to me its a no brainer. Both are good hockey players, but keep the younger one that can still grow. |

2 things
- Chicago should exposed Kruger and hope someone takes him up. Albatross contract for an overrated "defensive" player
- Columbus' roster sucks balls |

Not sure I would protect Colbourne over Gregerinko (sp?). I don't think he is that good to protect.
Tough to keep Atkinson over Jenner. Hard to have to expose Jenner based on his early success. Tough call. Not sure I would protect Bobrovsky to be honest. He seems to be an injury waiting to happen each year. |

I wouldnt say he has been doing nothing. He has a strong year with the Avs going through all the ringers of earning his ice time and developing. His defensive game is very strong, and when put in a top 6 role, he produces at a 40pt+ rate. Bottom 6 role he is very reliable defensively and can be put on a shut down line. Exactly he is 22 and last year was his first full season in the NHL after being jerked around by the Sabres for 3 years.
But unless you follow the team closely, you wouldnt know to look at those underlying numbers for Grigo. But to expose him over Colborne is just crazy...the guy had a 19% shooting percentage last year! To give the reasoning of producing at 5v5 to protect him and not taking that 7% spike in shooting percentage into consideration...come on I thought this was a fancy stats blog |

Columbus is guaranteed to make a trade. They could certainly find someone who has room to protect Jenner flip them a decent package of picks. |

Why would the Canes protect Staal? Isn't Jordan considered overpriced for what he brings? |

I expect the Canes to trade for or sign a Vet D to protect Murphy. Kid is going to have a big year. |

Overpaid Yes, but they don't have anyone to replace what he does...and even McPhee isn't taking that contract. So you could risk exposing him, but I don't see it.
Canes need his contract just to help get to the cap floor.
GMRF is not going after any high dollar FA. His plan is simple...draft, develop, make trades with cap strapped teams, and save the high dollar long term contacts for when the young Canes get near UFA...see Rask.
Lots of young good talent in the Canes pipe line...for once! |

Who do you sit to play this vet D to meet the 40/70 games?
I'm surprise they only gave Tennyson a one year deal. He could have made the 40/70 requirement with 40 games & a two year deal. |

Grab him late in the year. |

Honestly, why would any team bother protecting a goalie when everyone on this board knows either Fleury or Murray is going to be taken by Las Vegas?!?! |

Mainly because teams tend to need 2 goalies I'm told |
