He was one of our best players in the second half of the season. Why is everyone assuming he will develop a coke habit over the summer and regress from last season. Don't 19 year old kids usually improve ? - CanuckDon
They do - but only 3 out of the 50 posters here have any sort of optimism about something like that happening. Logic is a rare find these days.

Not addressing you.
It was a generalization.
You & I may bicker from time to time but you always keep it civil. - Marwood
Yes he does, usually with objective thoughts, and both of you guys are saying the same thing. JV come to camp ready to win a spot otherwise improve in Utica and learn what's required.

Management wants there top young players to develop in the best way possible. There reason they rotated in and out of the lineup was because they weren't AHL eligible and they didn't like their situation in junior. They had the kids on a plan that involved game time as well as days off in the gym to focus on nutrition and strength training. He will play in the top 9 every day or he will be in Utica - CanuckDon
If that is their method of development, it is certainly a new idea. I don't think I have ever heard that developing players 19 year old players in the weight room is the way to go.
I think they committed to those players because of pressure in Virtanen's case and because McCann legitimately earned a spot, they then needed him to " compete" after a slew of injuries.
I agree with you though if Jake is an every day player and gets a chance to succeed then he should be in the NHL, I don't doubt his ability to be able to do that. I do doubt that mgmt will sacrifice the potential of winning with a more established player over giving him those opportunities.
I hope I'm wrong because we very badly need Jake to be a top 6 player for us in the future. |

While they agree in principle, Marwood is glass half full while Belcher is glass half empty. I don't understand why some default to a worse case scenario |

Although I am saying he needs to win a spot where he gets the opportunity to score.

Not sure if it's a default mechanism, but if someones posts a position, others will analyze the position and counter with another...personally I like it and makes people (hopefully) be open to other points of view.
And I agree with both

He's spent the summer training with the Sedins - how could you not improve? This is possibly the best situation to put yourself in as a 19yr old. Not only is he focusing on his physical strength but his stamina, skill and most importantly his maturity. You might learn that at Kirk Mullers school for the financially gifted too but I'd choose The Sedins "I'm your teammate, train with us for free" summer school any day.
Hell Phil Kessel said he once spent 3 days out of the entire summer on the ice....3 days!!! Then he scored 37 goals that year. On the LEAFS!!! If old fatty a$$ Phil can improve - I'd say we put some faith in JV. |

It's funny because when I'm optimistic about other scenarios, like say Subban's, Gaunces or Zalewski's progression you think I'm bat poop crazy.
Anyways, my bigger point in all of this is that is nothing to panic about if he does get sent back. Part of the "Process" that is development. |

Almost everyone on here wanted Burrows bought out this off season and now they want to send Virtenan to Utica to make room for Burrows. - Marwood
Not a chance. If all things remain equal, Burrows will be sent to Utica before Virtanen. Either nobody claims him and he is there for injury relief or he gets claimed and the Canucks free up 4.5 mil of cap space. |

how bad was the situation in junior? (I know we heard this from Canuck management but it sounded a little hollow at the time and still does)
I think JV and McCann making the club had more to do with lack of depth than any situation in junior.
It was the same the year in Edmonton when the Oilers had Draisitl penciled in as 2c and ended up sending him back to junior when it was evident he wasn't ready.
I think the Canucks will miss JV if he starts in Utica, but I think it could help JV's confidence and scoring to play a top 6 role in Utica as opposed to a bottom 6 role in Vancouver.
if JV starts in Utica, I'd bet he is called up half way through the season because of injury/roster moves.

JV's deployment in Calgary was beyond bizarre. mccan made the team on merit and because of a lack of depth |

I doubt he gets sent packing. If mgmt were going to have him on a short leash I think they would of bought him out. Either way they end up having to pay the money but at least by buying him out they would of saved the cap.
That said I could see him as a press box regular if he is struggling. Personally I think he comes back and has a decent season (15 g 30 pts), he has definitely lost step the past few years but I think he was also a victim of some bad luck as far as goals went. |

If I post an opinion then it is the only one that matters. It is obligatory that I defence this opinion to the death. Whether you feel iam right or wrong, I can only be right.
This is the unwritten COC of summer time buzz.
If you disagree with me I will scorn your opinion until banned.
In this light I must disagree with this compromising attitude that you have taken Makita. And defend my non compromising opinion to the death/ban.....
