JV's deployment in Calgary was beyond bizarre. mccan made the team on merit and because of a lack of depth - CanuckDon
I do remember hearing that they had a pretty veteran heavy lineup and that by the time JV had gotten healthy he wasn't given as many opportunities as the year before.
Even then he scored he ended up scoring more points per game but just less goals.
He was beast in the WHL playoffs though and was given prime opportunities.

(frank), I'm still disappointed by that kid, Gillis made many mistakes but can't blame him for drafting him. At the time he looked like a grade A prospect and future captain to boot.
Goes to show how quickly things can change with these kids. |

Totally agree. I was disappointed at the time of the trade because at the time he was promising prospect who was a good puck distributer and preferred them moving Kesler if they needed to move a C. Perhaps he couldve developed differently under the Canucks but looking back they did ok on those moves |

I don't see JV to Utica as much as a negative as some do, or Burrows being a better option on the 4th line as positive. It's a matter of the roles on the team, JV needs increased playing time to be able to continue to progress. Based upon the roster (as it stands right now barring any further moves by JB) JV would seem to be one of several bubble players that will be needing to show that they belong in order to have one of those spots in the bottom 6.
Burrows, Etem, Gaunce, Granlund, Dorsett and JV are all going to have to prove something to JB and WD to earn a roster spot. None of them are guaranteed, I'd even include Baertchi in that mix as well although he's probably safer than the others. Only the Sedins, Bo, Hansen, Sutter and Eriksson have roster spots comfortably locked up at this time. Let's not immediately pencil JV or anyone else on the opening day roster until after training camp.
Not to mention, even if JV starts the season in Utica, that isn't going to immediately mean he's going to stay there for the season. Patience people, since we aren't going to contend legitimately until our new core of Bo, JV, Boeser, Juolevi and Demko mature there's no point in worrying about veterans being chosen over prospects in order to stay competitive. |

Doing lines in the bathroom in the gym where the Sedin's train is hardly a good example to make your point.
I'm not generalizing. |

He was mishandled in Vancouver and he also became a little too entitled. He also was put in a bad spot because Hank and Kesler had the 1/2C spots locked up and he wasn't going to push either of them out of those spots for several years had all things been equal. Had we not traded him then, likely as not he'd have forced a trade in that summer or in a year's time due to his contract status where he would have been an RFA looking for an offer sheet. |

I wasn't reffering to the trade or even his time here as much as the way his career plummeted. Coming out of Junior he was well regarded not just as a scorer but as a leader and solid player. |

Utica needed and still to a certain extent need quality AHL players, which is what Megna is. |

JV's deployment in Calgary was beyond bizarre. mccan made the team on merit and because of a lack of depth - CanuckDon
I think the depth factor was the biggest reason they stayed.
because of the lack of depth, McCann's shot and potential, a couple little hot streaks, really stood out and JV brought that speed and physical play that has been lacking for so long.
JV staying, vs. junior, last season seemed to work out, after the jr. tourney he got it going a bit and had some good games.
if JB had been able to sign a winger with size, speed and grit, even with very little scoring, I don't think we would be having this conversation about where JV should start, but since JB didn't add any grit, JV's speed, grit and offensive potential is desirable in the lineup.
the only want I have from JV is to see his offensive game get going, and Utica might be the best place for that to happen. maybe WD is the wild card in this too, depending on if JV stays, how much rope does WD give him, does he hold him back? |
