One quick chart to prove a 6th defender is a top-4!

I wonder who you're talking about here. Hmm...

Too long. Someone post me a chart if this is worth a read or not.

A fabulous article. I am appreciative you put this to print. It's an opinion that I would agree is truly mostly prevalent among the fans. The extremes steal the limelight of course.

You can use them to confirm. Most of these things are easily measured by eye, especially when told what to look for. They are not the be all end all.

I was able to take the following from his first paragraph alone...

I have been watching hockey for most of my life. A lot of the time sporadically, but really getting into it when I was 13 and playing the game myself. That’s when I bought my first ever jersey with my own money. A Joe Sakic Avalanche jersey. My second ended up being a Keith Tkachuk Coyotes jersey…ya…I know. I really think I started seeing patterns and trends when I watched Junior and European hockey as well as NHL hockey. My friends and I would debate vehemently over who was a better player. What a player did better than others. Their value. How overrated they were. How underrated they were. Who “sucked.” Who “ruled.” The level of discourse ranged from great to mouth slobbering idiocy. We’re all inherently biased, but the ability to articulate an opinion and bring something to the table is highly entertaining. The search for a singular truth has always worried me and I tend to lean towards cynical skepticism to open faced sardonic dismissal.

It clearly reads, "Vote Hillary for president"

Have you no shame, Adam? You make me sick!!!

Nice balanced article. The only thing I think you are understating is the impact of players that are considered "winners" and "losers." Rick Nash may not be the best example for trying to argue it doesn't exist. His international winning experience is really because he's not forced to be the "leader" on the team. He can just play his game and not worry about all the other stuff. You could say he's the Phil Kessel of international experience.

Players that are winners play through pain, sacrifice their body to make a play, are relentless on the ice, and inspire their teammates. Not exactly stuff that can be measured by a chart.

This was very well written. I would have liked to see some examples of certain players just to strengthen the point, but aided from that, I thought it was very solid.

I myself have learned that for certain players advanced stats can be useful....there are players that I though passed the eye test, but when I have seen their advanced stats (and how bad they were) they forced me to take a second look (and I did).

I think Kris Russel would be a good example here. I have also started to look deeper into things that may indicate a player will break out and this has helped me in my keeper pool, for sure.

As a billion people have said a billion times....everything in moderation, and once again it applies perfectly here.

People have to realize that Moneyball applies to baseball and in baseball it is a much more perfect science (nothing's is ever perfect). On base percentages, strike out percentages, etc. Align better and are more close to 'true indicators' of what a player is actually doing out there. Hockey advanced stats are an imperfect science. Players can be protected, players can adapt, frankly there are probably players out there playing to build their advanced stats as much as they are trying to score....and yes I mean that. If you are in a contract year, in today's NHL, would you not trying to be keeping your advanced stats as clean as possible? Because then, even if your production falls, you and your age net can claim it was a statistical anomaly....I mean just look at his advanced stats!!

I will liken the use of advanced stats to the trend where everyone tried to copy he playing style of the Cup winner. When a new 'style' of team wins the Cup everyone tried to become that team. 'Fast and young', 'big and tough', 'defensive and well coached in their own end'....it will never end. The funny thing is that every year the team that wins, does so because they were the hottest at the right time. Many styles can win.

Hopefully people will realize one day that advanced stats can be a piece of the puzzle....but only a piece.

"Fancy" stats are a nice innovation and a great tool when used in moderation.

I don't know if they are dumbing down the discourse but they are creating a divide.

Debating your buddies after several beers is a time honoured tradition. The past two or three years there always seems to be one stat geek in every crowd who feels that corsi trumps old time stats like cups, wins and goals...

In my circle of friends the conversation really couldn't possibly be dumbed down any further after the 6th round or so. But we always agreed to disagree and left the pub laughing and high fiving. Now the die hard stat geek needs to be escorted out by a bouncer on occasion.
