Just a hunch. But if I remember correctly, Habs went a year or so with NO captain because nobody stood out. I think they named Patches as captain with some hesitancy, as they didn't really like their choices. I am betting Weber will take over as Captain within a year or two. Patches isn't the guy you want leading the troops.
We will see....but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened by the start of next season! |

Looks like Max is starting this season where he left off Las season.Maybe Torts can get him going.Who knows? |

PAtches being Patches.
"Not sure why fans expect him to be something he's never been - WaterBoy
true,
pretty difficult to score an empty net goal when your team is down by 1 and you're sitting on the bench. |

Patches is more a pure goal scorer than an assist machine. Maybe he lost his identity on a team with a bunch of pure goal scorers?! |

Read another post where Max was call Evaporietty and that pretty much sums up his play. He has not been interested in being the player people wished he would be....I'd trade him now and get pieces back that the Habs need. |

Who cares what line one of the worst coaches in the league puts him on. Also, trading him is a terrible idea. Who exactly is replacing his scoring? Additionally, name a better winger on the Habs right now. |

Since the 2010-11 season, Pacioretty has been a 0.81 PPG in regular season. In the playoffs, this falls to 0.56. He's just not a clutch performer and probably isn't suited to the kind of tournament the World Cup is. He's also streaky, so maybe he'll hit a streak and perform? But he's not overly physical, so I'd be surprised. In Bergevin's words, he's the kind of player that gets you to the playoffs. Now, it's his job to find the player that will get us through those. |

Who on the Habs has a better playoff PPG than that? Nobody can score for the Habs comes playoffs, that's not only him.
It's good and all saying you should trade him or whatever, but were can you find a better replacement for the same money? Good luck with that. |

I'm not saying we should trade him, I'm saying he's not a playoff/physical type of player. As in Bergevin's words, there are player that get you to the playoffs and those that get you through them. He's the former and he's needed (especially considering his cap hit). But for the World Cup, I don't think his game fits the type of tournament so well.
EDIT: Player / PPG regular season / PPG in playoffs (since 2010-11)
Plekanec 0.64 / 0.50
Gallagher 0.60 / 0.53 (since 2012-13)
Galchenyuk 0.58 / 0.45 (since 2012-13)
Eller 0.35 / 0.49
Shaw 0.43 / 0.52 (since 2011-12, with Chicago)
Subban 0.64 / 0.73
Markov 0.55 / 0.38
Weber 0.63 / 0.42 (with Nashville)
So Pacioretty is actually losing more production than Plekanec and Gallagher and Eller and Subban are outperforming their regular season numbers. |

100% agree. Also, who cares about how he plays in this "world cup". It's a bunch of bs anyways. Oh let's full throttle, 110 % for something that doesn't matter. Maybe I can get hurt and f*ck my true obligation. You know captain of the habs. Can't believe the Americans are taking this so seriously. Who cares? |

I wouldn't read too much into the numbers for the young guys, as it takes a few playoff runs for them to learn what it takes. But the playoff numbers of the vets are the reason why this team will never make it to the final.

Well, if you remove the last playoffs from Plekanec's totals (where he went 3 points in 12 games), he actually produces at a rate of 0.61, which is pretty much the same as his regular season stats. The young guys (Gallagher and Galchenyuk) are producing less in the playoffs, but as you said, they may just get better with more experience in this type of game. Pacioretty isn't really considered young at this point, so his fall off in the playoffs is pretty much a given now and needs to be compensated somehow (maybe a Shaw type of player can create the space he needs, we'll see this year). |

I don't expect players to spend their 110% on these games, but I also expect them to play with heart. To become a pro athlete, you need an ego, a belief that you are the best, and even when the games are not the most important, you still want to win. You are paired with the best players of your country, if you can't win, then you aren't the best and that will hurt your pride. The season is long, getting hurt is never a pleasant thing, but I'd bet most players would rather win gold and miss half the NHL season then finish 5th and play all the NHL season. |

good day to all
i am a hab fan...to the max ..but i am not a big fan of pacioretty...not a leader thats for sure...goal scorer maybe but his biggest fault is how lazy he is I watched him play a few games and when he decides to play he does...but has a tendency to slack off when....pucks in the corner ...line change (brutal).. I am wondering if he wasn t part of the problem in the dressing room..i can imagine it would difficult to follow a leader who is not a leader...he reminds of a little mommy s boy..with his preppy look and his boyish face ...im sure when they voted him captain management had a lot to say in this decision ..as a player i would not have voted for him ...good trade bait ...

I'll agree to being biased and not really liking Pacioretty much either. He seems moody, and therefore, streaky. He just seems to lack that fire in his eyes. Sure, he can be a calm leader, but you also need some passion (see Béliveau, Jean). He looks too... beige to me, bland. He says all the right things, but not the right way. He seemed to have given up last year. Let's just hope that when he says it was a learning experience, he will indeed learn and not give up and show up with passion in his play. But as mentioned earlier, for what he brings in terms of points, you won't find many a player in the league at his price tag, so we have to do with him until we can find better within the organization (so about when he'll retire...). |

That is to be expected. Let's just hope we can keep it at a moderate cost and he'll accept a hometown discount. But considering he is a major discount right now, he may not be so inclined to take even more discount. A good trade would be in order at that time then. |

Nobody is ever happy. Subban was too energetic and got on his teammates nerves, Pacioretty is too bland. What's next? Carey looks too calm after a goal? Gallagher smile too much even when his team is on losing streak? If Pacioretty is gone people will find another player's personality they suddenly don't like. |
