He's still in college, so he isn't allowed to sign. I imagine they will sign him as soon as the college season ends. If it's early enough they'll try to coax him by burning the first year of his ELC. In all likelihood, the UND season will be longer than the Canucks season... - 1970vintage
I dont know if he would want to burn a year off his ELC, I think the league has changed a bit with the contract length limits. The money used to be made as UFA, so burning a year would get you there faster but more of it is coming on the second contracts. If he burns a year, less time to earn the money on second contract, might be stuck on a low offer bridge rather than securing a big deal that takes him the whole way to UFA |

Yeah, that's a stupid rule. Teams should have the same amount of time to sign a college draft pick from the moment their final college season ends as they do players in the CHL, and if those college players don't sign they should go back into the following draft. - 1970vintage

(frank) that guys a complete idiot, you don't manage because this might or might not be what the fans want, you manage and make decisions because they're the right ones. - LeftCoaster
I always think of GM Brian Burke firing Wilson after the Leaf crowd was chanting to fire him and then a week later, or whenever, they started chanting "fire Burke", and Burkie stopped attending games.
I guess it is just an excuse to do what you wanted to do, you get to blame it on the fans, and if you don't want to do what the fans are saying, then you just ignore them. |

I disagree. Reducing an ELC by a year gets him one year closer to being able to negotiate a fatter contract, be it the second or third SPC. |

Definitely if he produces, Gaudreau played one game to burn a year, then hit it big this summer but Krieder also burned a year of his ELC, playing in the playoffs and when it was over, he got a 2-year $2.475/year deal before then signing his latest $4.6/year deal.
Toews played all 3 years, second contract was $6.3, and I'm sure Eichel having played all 3 will walk right into a $6+ per year too. Really depends on how Boeser feels he can produce at the NHL level
EDIT: and given the opportunity and team surrounding him, I would probably give myself the biggest chance to prove I deserve a big contract based on 3 years of NHL play (with hopefully an improved supporting cast by year 3 ) than only 2 |

Is that how you read it? I think he's saying they want Jake to get big minutes/games to regain confidence and take a step forward, AND, fans may not like that we're sending him down, but that is the best thing for his development... - 1970vintage
I can understand that but it doesn't make much sense if it is supposed to be for only 2 games, if what Kuzma said is true.
It is a weird quote, sounds like he is worried about how the market will react, and makes me wonder if the reason why they kept JV with the club has more to do with appearing to be in it to make the playoffs or sell tickets than JV's development.
btw, with the transfer of the Presidency to Trump, I'm waiting for him to get briefed on all the weird area 51 stuff and he starts talking about aliens. so I could be labeled a bit of a conspiracy theorist. |

Did this thread die all of a sudden?
I think JV should stay in Utica so that he doesn't get ruined by WD. Discuss. |

He needs Ice time, he needs to develop and show he can beast mode it in the AHL. He's being an entitled brat right now. He doesn't know what is best for his career. |

I absolutely think it factored into their decision to keep Jake up when they knew he should've been sent down. This franchise has suffered through two decades of mismanagement, and yet they somehow almost won the Stanley Cup, I'm getting tired of it! |

So, E. Kane is healthy, after Virtanen gets the chance to show his stuff a couple id he drive away from Buffalo.
Makes ya think.
Benning's gotta do something, maybe this recent losing streak is enough to get him to pull the trigger on Kane, we all know he'd live to get ahold of him... |

No one is talking about mismanagement when things are good, weather it is happening or not. I used to get more worked up, but I guess I'm just mellowing in my old age, whereas you sir are turning into a grumpy old man |

I hope to hell he doesn't come here - dude has missed almost a 120 games in 7 season not including this year - he's nearly as injury prone as Booth, not to mention his sh$t attitude, troubles off the ice and expiring contract - he's a virus and the last thing this team needs

I think Van should foccus on a different BC kid, Barzal, just got sent back to junior, would be so solid to have him in the system. Kane wouldnt be bad but he does have negatives. |
