This off season was the first hint of that for me. - Sabresfan-365
Disagree, and here's why:
He wanted Fowler, or somebody like Fowler, such as Faulk from Carolina.
The asking price was the 8th overall pick, and he said no, and I agree with him.
Yes, he could have made a bargain basement signing like Seidenberg.
His other choice was trading somebody like Reinhart for a top end D man, but he didn't want to do that.
On top of that, then you have Hall for Larsson, which gave further credence for GM's asking the moon, stars, and the sky backing to continue the absurd asking prices.
So, unless he traded Reinhart as the centerpiece of a deal to get the top end D man needed, what was he going to do to fill that glaring hole?
With the way things were going at the time, it looks like it would have taken Reinhart and the 8th pick to truly get a top pair D like Lindholm. That is a serious price.

My mistake. That's a little more encouraging. - Sabresfan-365
He was talking about guys that haven't necessarily won at the NHL level yet, but have won at other levels, played in big tournaments, stuff like that.
lol what? I just heard the Bylsma "We're hard to play against, not physically, or with how we play..." quote, and the full quote is no better, it's nonsensical. Something about home or away, good teams, blah blah blah.

The problem here is the two aren't comparable. I wouldn't trade kane for fowler. I would trade Nylander for Faulk, especially at that contract.
The longer they wait to address that need, the more likely it is that this will be the only way to solve that problem.

Murray has been here 3 years. He's built this defense. We need to stop pretending like his hands were tied.
He chose what to do with the glut of assets he had, which was ignore, or fill the defense with underperforming players

About how Poile called him before he claimed Grant to see how Murray would react. Murray said he'd rather Poile not claim him. Poile did anyway, and Murray told him to go (frank) himself, the last part is speculation based on what he said, something to the effect of "I had less nice words for him after he claimed him". So there seems to be sort of a courtesy call type thing throughout the league. He also said he didn't want to put an AHL claim in on the guy he picked up recently, partly because everyone else would have a crack at him partly because he just didn't want to. I'm guessing it's kind of like RFAs. But he said that you have to do what's best for your team.
