Fans didn't want a tear down after coming so close to Cup. They were looking for a retool to go after it again. Now 6 years later you got only 6 guys left from that team. A few propects in the system and mix bag of players that if all healthy is behind the curve of competitiveness among other winning teams.

SO now with contracts being what they are a few more of the older team will be moved. It won't change anything on the ice for years. But it will open spots for the next crop of prospects to earn a spot. While more guys are drafted and hopefully developed.

None of the above means success. Just means change. Now the success part well that seems to be a whole different chase. Notice how many teams stalked with draft picks or rebuilding from tear downs are still at it.

lol don't speak on behalf of me. I knew once they lost in game 7, that it would be nearly impossible to come back and repeat the success of that year, a year later.

He came onto the scene this year. Has been absolute dynamite in junior, got called up to the pens, played ok, but couldn't be sent to the AHL cause hes too young.

Guy doesn't know what back checking or defense is. Good offensive ability though. We could do much better IMO.

Jim Benning was setup beautifully by Mike Gillis (unknowingly) and Ryan Kesler when he took over in 2014, they had a multitude of draft picks in which to start a rebuild with, sadly the owner wouldn't let a proper rebuild (in my mind) happen.

My dislike for everyone from the coach up to the owners started then and there, and nothing's changed for me about them to this day.

Fans wanted change after 2014. The previous few seasons of playoff one and dones was enough, clearly evident the club was lacking offense, skill, grit.

every approach's criteria for success see's draft picks develop into nhler's. always having players in the ahl pushing their way up.

it takes time.

You were using your hindsight crystal ball I suppose

I did say retool ... right....so that meant changes not a repeat of same people. By the way they won the Pres. Trophy the next year. So they must have been in the running. Just didn't get enough of the right changes in. Played the wrong match up of a team at the wrong time. Playoffs. It happens to the best of them.

But don't you remember the suspensions and injuries to Malhotra, Kesler, Edler and Hammer, etc. the list is long and the ductape holding up who was left exhausted. The retool was about getting bigger players in to battle it out. Stay healthy and they had a chance again.

Anyway. The game changed. Teams improved. The window shut and what was left we have seen change up. Just not enough to have turned a corner. New stars are needed and we debate who and what and where. So that's the rub of where things are at for the Nucks now.

I think many people including myself thought that the Canucks still had a competitive team in 2012 a year from losing the cup by 1 game and back to back presidents trophies.

Anyone claiming they "knew" the Canucks needed to rebuild at that point is straight up full of poop.

No crystal ball needed. I can genuinely say that I wanted to shake things up after that year. You can only stretch out soo many years out of the same core group of guys before things just need to be changed. I have never like Bieksa, never liked Raymond, thought Malhotra was only really good for faceoff's, wanted to shake the image of being a cheap/chirpy/ratty team by getting rid of Burrows/Kesler. I also thought Ballard was constantly a liability and that Erhoff was soft. No need to dive back into that cup run, but I can honestly say, that I have been pro-rebuild ever since the game 7 loss.

no is claiming they would know that this would happen, but in all honesty, everyone saw it coming. You can only ship soo many picks for rentals, you can only mortgage your prospect cupboard for rentals and help now for X amount of years before it bites you in the ass. You can only give out soo many NMCs/NTC's before you realize that MAYBE, just MAYBE at the tail end of those contracts, you might be stuck with a player/situation like Higgins where you are stuck. Nobody knew how bad the Canucks would be in 2017, back in 2012,but we all could get the sense that this would happen...

Developing draft picks or waiting to see if they turn out takes time. Correct. It's a key tool for teams. However, succes for a team is a whole different set of criteria that isn't about time and waiting on draft picks. That's my point. If it was just about drafting and waiting I can list 20 or so teams that have been doing that over and over.

i believe you. i had friends that voiced the same opinions (about the team and the same players). i was still all in for 2012 (which was the last straw) so i can't say that i agreed at the time but it wasn't a totally uncommon opinion. minority opinion for sure but it was out there so the hindsight tag is unfair.

A team that I see similar to the 2011/2012 nucks is how the NYR have been handled in the last few seasons. Shipping off players like Duclair / 1st round pick / 2nd round pick for Keith Yandle. We all know how that worked out and where Yandle is now. The NYR AHL team currently sits in last place in the AHL, so it just goes to show what happens when you hit the panic button on trades for help now and rentals. All I am saying, you can only mortgage picks/future for so long before it catches up with you, and any Canucks fan could see that what Gillis did with deals like Roy, Ballard, Andrew Alberts, Chris Higgins (worth the 3rd rnd pick), Max Lap (not worth the 3rd round pick), Sammy Pahlson (two 4th rnd picks), Zac Dalpe (4th round pick).

FYI - all the players mentioned above where acquired with picks going the other way. That is a TON of potential prospects that we missed out on. Obviously hindsight is 20/20, and good teams need to make trades for rentals if they want to go deep into the playoffs, but there are also teams who realize its not their year, and ship Tomas Fleischman and Dale Weise out for a young 24 year old former first rounder (Philip Danault) and a 2nd round pick. It is deals like this that the Canucks need to make.

Yes and no. Sure Benning had assets to trade and some picks but MG also left benning with 9-10 NTC's to deal with. Ask the Flames how long it takes to get out from under that one.

I can't sit here and say I knew how bad we would be, but I honestly feel that any Canucks fan had to know this day would eventually come, obviously not ever knowing the extent of how bad.

Boston completely pushed Vancouver around, and I remember thinking, if this is the model that teams are going to go after once they see the Bruins success, we won't be able to repeat moving forward.
