I have seen much worse many times that didn't receive a penalty let alone a hearing

and I thought player history plays a role in this

risto has no history

- homiedclown

But Sid the Kid was within 5 feet of the hit, so he will be suspended. We have to look out for Sid, he might have a nightmare now or something. And the NHL can't have that!

Risto is tall the player has his head down and Risto does jump a little into the hit. It wasn't a hip check Risto was turned so it was more of a Kronwal throwing his back into a player check.

The guys face is all bloody...

- Stripes77

Bloody from his head/visor hitting the ice. Risto did not hit him in the head AT ALL. Watch again. I've literally watched 100 times this morning. No contact with the head. Its all hip. No he COULD of destroyed him going high. But he turned the hip and glided in for a clean hip check (if he had the puck) then the as he hits the ice, visor and head slam, causing the concussion/cut.

Straight from the NHL rule book:

The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize contact.

So you can disagree if you want but this is word for word in the NHL rule book.

- Stripes77

Also from the rule book.
Rule 635 | Spearing
(a) A major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to a player who pokes or attempts to poke, whether or not contact is made, an opponent with the point of the blade of his stick.

(b) A match penalty for attempt to injure or deliberate injury to an opponent may also be assessed for spearing.

If Risto has a hearing than Crosby should have a hearing. its not it is a blatant misuse of star power and the NHL.

Does the Landeskog kick to the nuts count as a spear since the stick wasn't used?

My guess is 1 game.
Based on how the NHL calls penalties and suspension currently it should be none.

Kronwall makes contact with the head on that hit a lot, just FYI.

Edit Hit number 8 is a leaping elbow to the head for crying out loud
Edit 2 - hit 6 is straight shoulder to the face.

I was just looking for an example of what Risto was doing.

Aka throwing your back at a player. The first his is a perfect example.

Risto shouldn't get more than 2 games.

In no way, shape or form does his head come in contact with Risto.

The top of helmet would of hit. The way his head is down and angled its shoulder, just below the jaw and then the head snaps from the impact.

Look at the other angle. How are you going to screenshot from that angle when you can't see the point of contact? LMAO. We ARE done here.

P.S not Risto's shoulder.

hit was worthy of the game misconduct -- i'm not sure of extra games because of the misconduct already, but wouldn't be surprised to see 2-3, and also wouldn't be upset with 2-3.

He destroyed a guy who was nowhere near the puck. Yes the puck was on its way to the guy, but it never got there. He committed too early, I doubt he could have pulled up any because he was already committed, but the fact is he committed to early and clearly destroyed a guy nowhere near the puck is why the play needs to be reviewed. Doesn't matter if the guys head is down, he didn't have the puck so is not eligible to be checked.

also the fact that Crosby took a cheap shot at ROR has nothing to do with this hit. Just because he hit him and got away with it (in the game) doesn't mean that it's ok and the opposing team can just do what it wants.

I think Crosby should be fined (no suspension). That was dirty and cheap, but it happens. You want it out of the game but there will always be dbags who take advantage when they can. The ref's missed it - oh well, but the league should step in and say its not acceptable and fine him.

The shoulder part is irrelevant. It's contact to the head that matters, whether it's shoulder, elbow, chest, back, nether region, etc.

My two cents. Certainly not the worst hit ever. I missed the first two periods but after reading all the comments I was expecting a vicious which it wasn't. Not sure what Rist was doing but the onus was all on him as he hit JG who was facing forward without the puck with what I can only describe as an ass check. To me, JG gets injured when his face hits the ice. Deserving of the game misconduct he got but not sure if he should get anymore.

He explodes up delivering the hit.

Which means he wasn't trying to let up. Which if he was actually looking he would have been able to.

Here is the other angle:

Haha okay!

No need to go to your corner!

We are good!

Believe me I wanted to defend him last night. I was pretty mad he got tossed until I saw a different angle.

It sucks but the right call was made.

And full speed it really is hard to tell with his head because he has it so far down, and with Risto turning his back, but once you start to play around with all the angles and slo-mo, you are right. And at full speed i didn't realize he left his feet because its quick. He was a good 8 inches off the ice.

Give or take.

if they want to avoid these injuries make the players skate with 10 lb bags of sand on each ankle

moulson and franson are exempt to this bag rule
