I disagree with Graziano that the only way to save DeHaan is for Boychuk or Ladd to waive their NMCs. DeHaan can be protected along with 4 other D and 3 forwards. Among forwards, only JT, Ladd and Lee deserve to be protected. Not that I want to lose Strome or Nelson, but they are more easily replaceable than DeHaan.

It's a possibility, but it's not crazy to think that Ladd and/or Boychuk waive their NMC for the purpose of the draft. Vegas ain't touching those guys at that age with that much term/money left. There's a microscopic amount of risk in letting them waive and, truthfully, it wouldn't even be the end of the world if McPhee took one of them. |

Yeah, but why would Ladd and/or Boychuk allow that, after negotiating the NMCs into their contracts? You'd have to pay for that, no?
Who else on the Isles really needs to be protected anyway? Are you going the 7 forwards, 3 D route? I have a hard time coming up with 7 forwards that I care about. (I'm only talking about guys who need to be protected.) |

I'm not sure if I'm understanding what you're getting at or if you know this, but they are allowing the waiving of NMC's just for the purpose of exposing players to the expansion draft, without actually nullifying the NMC. So Boychuk/Ladd would just be exposing themselves, I can't imagine they're stupid and think that anyone wants a 30+ player on a long term deal with the cap hit that they carry.
I'm not sure there are 7 forwards that need to be protected either, just saying that I don't think it's so far-fetched to see either guy waive. But if you made me pick 7 forwards to protect: 91, 16, 27, 29, 18, 25, 12.
Before someone jumps down my throat about protecting some of those guys, I don't love them all either...but throwing away assets is never a good idea, especially when 29 other teams are going to need to fill holes that get created when Vegas takes one of their players. Josh Bailey's trade value will never be higher than this offseason, I pray to god whoever the hell is in charge sees that. |

The Isles need a new GM for that to even be a consideration. Snow would hang up on anyone looking to acquire Bailey.

Seriously though, if we are able to hang onto all those guys...there will be teams out there that are going to need to fill middle-6 holes and I think the Islanders would be able to capitalize on that. Flipping a Bailey, Strome, or Nelson at a premium may be the order of the day post-expansion draft. |

I did NOT know about the one-time waiver of the NMC. However, that doesn't necessarily change my point of view. If I'm Boychuk or Ladd, and Snow (or replacement) comes to me (or more likely my agent) and says he wants me to waive my NMC for this one time only, my (agent's) reaction would likely be, "And what's in it for me (my client)?"
Also, if you go the 7 - 3 route, which 3 D do you protect? |

I know this doesn't necessarily fit the mold of your question, but assuming that:
- 55 waives
- I need to pick 3 defenseman
I'd trade de Haan and protect 2, 3, 6.
I'd prefer to move 3 but his trade value is probably pretty low right now. Not worth moving him for peanuts. I'd rather hold out and let him get healthy and hope for a resurgence. |

I'm not impressed with de Haan. Isles gave up a lot to move up to draft him and he brings very little offense to the table. I think he would be someone to get a lot of assists and add to the attack. I want to trade Nelson in a package. I'd like to give Strome one more shot next year. |

de Haan is coming off his best season ever. He was our most consistently reliable defenseman. He brings a lot to the table, he's just not a big point producer. |

I could see teams being interested in any of those three. I may be in the minority but I haven't given up on Strome. I think he clashed with Crappy and could do better under a different coach.
I still say there is no chance in hell that Snow trades Bailey. He'll probably be looking to extend his contract. |

I want a big point producer back there. Hopefully Toews is that guy. He's 23 and had a full year in Bridge. Time to bring him up to the big club. |

Close enough. I completely agree about Hamonic. He was a decent d-man for years, then kind of suddenly went downhill this season. He's worth protecting in the hope that he bounces back to his old form. He won't get a decent return in a trade this off season. |
