it's a lot but John Tavares is one of the best players in the NHL and a bonafide #1 center. in that deal, you're giving up Lindgren (who with a signed Price, you don't need), Galchenyuk, over whom Tavares is a major overall improvement, and Sergachev, who is a very nice prospect but by no means a sure-thing #1.

i think Montreal is a lot more likely to pull the trigger on that deal than NY.

and after making that trade, you still need 2 players on your top 6, you just lost your best prospect on a defense prospect pool that is very, very thin, and you just gave pretty much everything you had to trade to make your team better.
