I seem to recall this being brought up before and being scoffed at endlessly.....

I think it's unlikely the Flyers do anything like taking on a defenseman. They need the roster space in order to give guys a chance next year.

Possibly could have positioned themselves to take on a forward, but with Filppula's spot and salary solidified for next season, I see that as unlikely as well.

I really think this is going to be a quiet offseason. I'm not even sure they should sign anyone other than a goalie and their own guys.

I'm actually curious. Did the NHL put out any sort of mandate on how players must be classified? I can see a case being made for goalies, but why can't a forward play as a defenseman or vice versa?

As far as I know, when a coach submits a roster, he does not have to designate any position except for goaltenders. For instance, guys like Sami Kapanen and Sergei Fedoirov rotated back to D when needed. Dustin Byfuglien and Brent Burns have "offically" played both spots.

Just seems like a loophole that Homer would try to jump through.
