What happens if the other team gets competitive and wants the cap space in a year or two. Puts pressure on Hossa to report or retire. If he doesn't show they start fining him, etc.
Not certain it would happen but think Hawks would forever have worries in the back of their mind until contract is officially dead. - Gerk

Fair enough, I'm assuming by the very rare chance he is not actually allowed to go on LTIR.
More likely what is to happen is that he is granted LTIR status but league moves to implement other restrictive rules around the practice. IE will freeze him out from ever coming back and playing, not allowed to buy out or trade LTIR players, etc. Punitive moves like that. - Gerk
I was thinking the same thing.... so probably "no". |

I think Sharpie has a 3-4 month rehab term after hip surgery. Not a good thing for a vet his age. And I doubt he wants to play for $1M on a one year deal.
I'm looking for bigger, younger, faster and with a very sour, nasty disposition toward opponents. - RickJ
So are 29 other teams, and they happen to have more cap room to make that happen than the Hawks do. |

Those are great future CBA questions, toss in graduating college players being set free as well. |

Aivis Kalnins: Hearing that the KHL is leaning towards releasing all of Dynamo Moscow players and making them free agents. This would give them a few days to sign new players and get ready for training camp. |

Why? Where do you draw the line? Are some players allowed to return from LTIR and others can't? Does the league force him to retire because of a medical condition but penalize the Hawks for it? They likely just need to think about how to handle LTIR in the next CBA. |

Any chance that the Hossa contract going to AZ for something nominal was "Part B" of the Hjalmarsson deal. It just could not be announced until the NHL decides on his LTIR status? Just asking. - -Doh-

As I understand LTIR, it goes into effect on day 2 of the regular season, so you are still "up against it" and it is being done that way to prevent teams from circumventing to sign free agents. |

He isn't young, but he might rebound back to the level he was at before last year which was decent numbers for a 2LW or 3LW. It is all about the risk vs the $$$.
For the right money, he is worth a shot to add depth. |

Beniot, is a good skater with some size. would not be a bad 3rd line LW for the hawks.
mc79hockey @mc79hockey
Without looking, take a guess where Benoit Pouliot is in 5v5 PTS/60, 2007-14.
mc79hockey @mc79hockey
Answer is 77 out of 319 F. Some third line forward.
mc79hockey @mc79hockey
Pouliot’s played at least 120 minutes in a season with 39 skaters over the past four years. How many of those saw their Corsi improve w him?
mc79hockey @mc79hockey
Actual answer there is 34/39 players who played at least 120 minutes with Pouliot did better with him than without
In 14-15 and 15-16, he had 1.99 points/60 - third on the Oilers (McDavid, Hall)
Same two years, +2.1 CF%rel - sixth on the Oilers.
16-17: 1.08 points/60, -1.6 CF%rel.

Kovalchuck talking extension with KHL team. So much for that wonderful Russian line rumored to be heading to CBus. at least the mercenary bailed BEFORE coming back to North America. |

Regarding coming back off LTIR. I would be expecting something to the effect of, if you are on LTIR for X amount of time you are not eligible to come back for the playoffs. More cap circumventing issues. Coming back during year I think they would be fine with.
League wants to avoid the optics of having Hossa go on LTIR, not play one game all year, come back for playoffs and play with no cap impact. However unlikely that is to happen. |

Agreed. Him or Pouliot or Gagner, etc for a 1-1.5m prove it deal. |

Spoke to nearly a dozen people about the #Blackhawks' 2017 draft class. Here's what they said about the players:
https://theathletic.com/7...ckhawks-2017-draft-picks/
ETA: one snippet on Jokijharju
Portland Winterhawks coach and general manager Mike Johnston: “I thought originally that he’s a very good skating, breakout defenseman. He’s really deceptive on his breakouts, makes first good pass. I thought early on he had some trouble in North America with the smaller corner and heavy forechecking pressure. It didn’t take him long because he was a guy who gut us out of the zone with the puck. On the power play, he gets his shot through. He doesn’t have an overpowering shot and he’ll have to work on that. He’s really good along the line. He’s quick on the blue line. He has great deception in his game, carrying the puck. In his own zone, I think he reads it well defensively. I think he’s a Chicago Blackhawks type defenseman. He’s in good position, good stick and transitions the puck fast. That seems to be their template.” |

There will always be team(s) that look for these types of deals, ie deals to get them over the floor. |

I'm pretty sure teams can be up to 10% above the salary cap during the summer, must be cap compliant by Oct. 1, and then can LTIR on Oct. 2 |
