as has been posited by several others, the targets should be offensive players (vets or reclamation projects) on shorter term contracts.

i don't think any free agent should be seen as a "long term" canuck even if he succeeds on the team.

even if (especially?) if they do well, they should be traded for picks/prospects. rinse and repeat for a couple of years.

i would prefer management's vision to be "let's get some buffer type players and make them look good so we can trade them."
