Carol will you be at UBC to watch prospects? If so, on Palmu, if you noticed on your blog video, we raised this end of last thread, he's been used on the point in PP. Could you ask if Palmu could be a PP QB option? Something that he could work on?
Plus we know of contract for Finish league which was done before draft. Maybe if he was passed over again. Is there an out clause where AHL would be an option now for Palmu? Will you be able to ask Canucks what they would want now after seeing him at development camp? - Nuck4U
I find this whole notion of a "PP quarterback" to be complete nonsense. A defenders job on the PP (in my opinion) should be to hold pucks on the blue line and occasionally make a pass/shot. Not run the entire powerplay, that's the centres job.
Sure, there are plenty of good, puck moving defenders that play the power play, but they are also good defenders on top of it (Burns, Doughty, Keith come to mind).
If a defender's only bright spot is playing 2nd line PP minutes, I don't want him.
Just my thoughts on that whole business. Seems like we are looking for a defensemen that won't really play defence, I don't buy it. |

I don't have a wife but I would gladly sell a human being for more offence.
I just see offence coming more easily from our forwards, than from our defence that can't even defend |

See clips of Erik Karlsson on the PP, you will be blown away on how good he is on the blueline on power plays. |

Not what I was getting at, I have a problem with bringing up a guy that can't make the NHL because he's not good enough at his own position(SUBBAN) throwing this "PP QB" label on him and thinking he will be successful playing 3rd line minutes and being gifted ice time.
Karlsson is an amazing defender (my favourite player in the NHL), thus he makes for an amazing man on the PP.
Just because Yannick Weber was on this fashionable Nashville corps, doesn;t mean he didnt get picked apart on the PK by better players on Pitt. |

I can see this happening in the future.....
McDavid with a $13.5m bounty contract...
JV runs over him again...
Kassian races in losing it like usual...
JV ignores him & lets Kassian take a solo penalty...
BB scores on the PP...
Kassians next shift he's looking for a scrap...
Gadjovich asks him if he has pyjamas?
Kassian asks why?
I'm putting u to sleep.... |

I can see this happening: Mcdavid/Kassian win a few cups and JV/Gadjovich never make the NHL. |

Thanks Carol, great blog and great piece on BR!
I'm betting it's pure coincidence that Palmu and Gadjovich are best friends and JB drafted them both, but that's the kind of thing that can make a substantial difference in their development a year or 2 from now when they are in Utica trying to take that next step. |

He's drafted or signed former teammates that are prospects four times , there is no such thing as coincidence. I wouldn't be surprised if their were more that I'm missing, seems to like this as a strategy. (thought it was a great idea with WD and the med hat boys too)

Well I can't blame you not liking a football term used for hockey. As far as the role it's something the hockey community is pushing as an effective way for the power play to generate offense. To come from the point. It really doesn't matter if you are a forward or D both have been used by different teams. Guess preference is a d man in case puck is lost so they can defend.
Anyway, had a lot of questions in that post you replied to for Carol. Hope Carol answers or sheds light there. Palmu is that type of lower round pick that could turn into found gold. What really powers a rebuild. |

Rathbone is all Brackett and I doubt it had anything to do with Demko. Agree on the others |

Majority of teams run a 4F-1D powerplay anyways, if youre picking between a Yannick Weber/Jordan Subban-type D, or a forward to defend a shorthanded rush, there will be minimal difference
I agree with the PP QB label nonsense. You just need a good playmaker that can distribute the puck effectively on the powerplay, it doesnt need to be any specific position |

Sam Gagner was pretty effective on the point for CLB last year. As far as defensive capabilities, speed covers a multitude of sins. |

Weber didn't play PP for nashville.
D men pinching from the point, going between the hashmarks and to the net, and jumping into odd man rushes is the new norm. I agree it's not QB or whatever, but it is offensive minded enough to score and join the rush and find the lane. We have Stecher that can do this without getting burned, that's about it. We have Hutton that can do this, but not without getting torched consistently. Jb knows it and is trying I think. I would not be surprised to see kuliakov or delzotto given a shot. |
