Despite Staal having to provide a list of 15 teams to approve a trade to after this upcoming season, only a few of them at most would be likely interested in acquiring him. In addition, there is no guarantee that some team will pick up a sufficient enough portion of his $5.7M annual cap hit amount to benefit them greatly (if at all) via a trade, as opposed to the amount saved via a buyout, (much better so next summer), despite paying cap hit charges, & without also having to part with a top prospect &/or pick as well.

Would have liked to see Jensen and Marek Hrivik, who wasn't given a qualifying offer and signed with Calgary, compete for spots. I think both could have nicely fit in on the fourth line and provided some depth at Hartford, just in case.

They didn't give Hrivik a qualifying offer and he will get a shot to play in Calgary. Jensen likely figures if he goes to Europe and plays well, he will have increased interest in him, resulting in a bigger payday than he would receive now.
