everyone is entitled to their own opinion that's the joys of a blog about a single player. lots of different opinions!

martin protected Matthews, nylander and marner at different times throughout the season after they were hit or roughed up, he lost some of those fights and was even in the others. that's his job and he does it well.

if martin didn't do his job well the leafs wouldn't have had as much success from all those rookies as they felt comfortable and somewhat safer on the ice knowing they had players like martin/polak out there to help if need be.

Zone entries, zone exits, puck retrievals, corsi and playing a heavy shift are some of the key things babcock looks for in a shift.

I think babcock values martin for his hard hitting heavy play, over anything else.

Playing with Smith most the year probably didnt help, not a fan of giving 4th liners term really tho. Hopefully he can put together a decent year coming up..

It's insane the Leafs still have Martin and that they pay him what they do. He's next to useless and his contract is hilarious. But he's old school hockey yadda yadda.......and taking the place of a skilled player for no reason!

Marty is skilled enough to play very little each night... not complain about it... and be a pro. also to make his teammates feel like they are bigger and meaner then they are... they will act a little tougher, stand taller.. and not be afraid out there when sh!t gets nasty. We need Marty and maybe another real mean defencemen to help our guys.

You put Sosh in his place and Freddy gets run.. matthews gets hit from behind.. and marner is stuck dropping the gloves... whatta we gonna do then? You need it... even if he never fights... the presence of a guy that will have your back no matter what is sooooo clutch. If you don't agree... then you've never played (or at least not played competitively enough.)

Quote honestly, I wouldn't have been surprised to see Pegula give him a higher salary than McDavid as some sort of stunt. Then go out and say "this is our commitment to our belief that we got the better player". Then they'll hand an extension to Housely for $51mil and say "this is our commitment to our belief we got the best coach". Then they'll repaint the parking lot lines at the arena and the whole city will explode into applause.

But Matt Martin, as good of a guy he is and as good of a teamate he can be....

I completely disagree with him being a useful element on the ice and/or being "one of the best 4th liners in the game".

He's probably, imo, the worst contract on the Leafs too (unless Marleau blows more than expected).

I agree with you on that. It's impossible for us to say what kind of affect and influence he had on the rookies because we're not around the team. So if they say that he makes them more comfortable then I'm willing to take their word for it. Whether you think that justifies $2.5M a year is a matter of opinion.
