Matt Martin barely did anything last year. He fought when he got frustrated and maybe a handful of times he stuck up for rookies.

blech.

Martin hits and can fight.
although I feel after his lost fight vs McQuaid he lost a bit of his step last year - always thought he got some kind of concussion there..

it's ridiculous to say that Martin is a waste of a roster spot - there's only a few really good players (Matthews - Marner - Nylander) and then the rest are basically fillers that need to play a specific role.
The role of forechecking, punishing opponents with hits and wearing them done is something Martin (and Komarov) does quite well.
Kapanen will never reach the Marner-Matthews-Nylander category of putting up points; in that perspective Kapanen is more of a waste of roster spot than Martin.

so JVR and Kapanen for a 1st? not a bad trade....2 fillers for a 1st.

Agree with your sarcasm. Martin can't hold a candle to Alfie Turcotte, Rene Borque, Marius Czerkawski, Jason Ward or Marcel Hossa.

not really ; since most 1st round picks turn out to be fillers as well

That's a start. Martin is a temporary measure. He will be with the Leafs probably for this season and be gone the following year. There are two problems with him being a long term solution. One he is not tough enough, and therefore does not offer enough deterrent for opposing teams to cheapshot our younger stars. Second, he does not have enough talent. Lucic was picked up by the Oilers to make sure that what those two lowlife dirty talentless goons on the Flyers did to McDavid in his rookie campaign does not happen again. He also has significantly more ability and talent than Martin. The Leafs are drafting bigger for a reason on defense. Hopefully one of those d-men will stick and be every bit the animal, I mean deterrent that Lucic is.

Lamoriello says it Liljegren will either be playing pro in Sweden or with the Marlies next season. One or the other.
